Winter Walkies to Butterfly Creek

Come along and join us for a winter walk to Butterfly Creek! This is a hugely popular walk in summer and is a great way to stretch the legs and warm up in winter. In keeping with tradition we have a choice of two walks to get there. The level of difficulty of both walks is regarded as MODERATE.

Both walks do involve an upward zig-zag climb (200 metres) over the hills for about the first 20 minutes. After the ‘hard-part’ you are rewarded with a less strenuous stroll through beautiful and tranquil beech forest along a stream.

Both tracks end up at Butterfly Creek picnic area, which is where we'll all hang out for a while to chill and enjoy the nature - so do bring along some food to share, refreshments, toys, balls, etc.

We'll then all head back out together in two groups, on whichever track you prefer, aiming for a roughly 3pm, or thereabouts, rendezvous at the pub.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

For starters, choose whatever option below best suits you and your dog(s). When you RSVP, put a note in the Comments letting everyone know which option you are going to do.

OPTION 1 - Long Walk to Butterfly Creek (Mackenzie Rd Track) - 11.00am start

At 11.00am head off on the Mackenzie track (starts at the top of Mackenzie Rd) for a lovely bush walk (off lead) to Butterfly Creek picnic area. Here, we'll meet up with the Kowhai track walkers and hang out for a while to chill and enjoy the nature.

The Mackenzie Track to Butterfly Creek takes approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes each way.

OPTION 2 - Shorter Walk to Butterfly Creek (Kowhai St Track) - 11.30am

At 11.30am head off on the Kowhai track (starts at the top of Kowhai St) for a lovely bush walk (off lead) to Butterfly Creek picnic area. Here, we'll meet up with the Mackenzie track walkers and hang out for a while to chill and enjoy the nature.

The Kowhai Street Track takes approx. 1 hour each way.

OPTION 3 - Sod the Walk, I'll see you at the Pub! - 3.00pm

At 3.00pm get yourself (& your dog) to Brew'd Pub, 5 Oroua Street, Eastbourne Village. There are tables out the front. The walkers will join you once we all emerge from the wilderness - some may already be there! (Weather dependent)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

As with any walk in the NZ outdoors, make sure you are equipped with appropriate footwear, and warm & waterproof clothing, just in case. If the weather is particularly bad, I'll send out an email by 8.00am on the morning of the event advising of cancellation.

Looking forward to having you join us!

Andrew & Jack the Lab.

So sorry organisers, Buster and I didn't make it - had something come up on Sunday. If Buster had known he was coming to this he would have been mad at me. I hope you guys didn't wait for us (too long).

So so so pleased I skipped the cycling for the morning to come along and join this walk. As always, had the best day! Wow, what a bunch of energetic dogs today in the mix - don't know how they kept going. Both dogs fell asleep in the car (you know that doesn't happen easily), kujo now very stiff and sore but both fast asleep in front of the fire - got my cycling in too. Thanks for the great company, and the many laughs from our crazy dogs. So love this group!

I meant to put a caption with that pic of Blue I uploaded... That was her after the pub. I think she was actually just really tired, but she looks really creepy! I turned around and she was staring at me like that from the boot of my car...

Charlie a very tired girl. Thanks for the great company we both really enjoyed ourselves today, Charlie trying to act innocent that she was not a trouble maker.....

Well I guess I could have gone straight to the pub! Maybe this walk description could have added ' this walk is a steeper climb on the way back?' !!

In case anyone checks the message board, sorry something just came up and I won't be able to go. Very disappointed. The only comfort is Meeko will be taken on a big walk in Belmont park by a friend. Hope you all have a great time!

Hi again everyone, I am sorry to be a pain, but please!! Where do I go to meet for the shorter walk, is it somewhere on Kowhai street? I have never been to this walk before! thanks a lot!

    July 10, 2014

    • Tania S

Lyndsay, Kowhai Street if off to the left as you drive along Muritai Road, Eastbourne. Find yourself a car park on Kowhai St then walk all the way up to the end of Kowhai Street (uphill) and you will see the steps where the track starts. This will be the point where others who elected to do the shorter walk will gather. Whilst it is a shorter walk, there is still an uphill climb for the first part of the walk to get over the ridge. Enjoy the day! :-)

      Thanks Tania!

Unsure if I will be able to come now - can't train Saturday and am supposed to be joining a training ride on Sunday morning to get my pace and fitness up a little. But the dogs are missing out so will see if I can go a couple of weeks without training.

    July 6, 2014

    • Andrew W.

Yep. Give us the dogs, go for a ride, meet us all at the pub later!

      1 · July 7, 2014

    • Katiepie

That is super kind Jen thank you, but not quite sure i can make it happen. Training is at 9am in upper hutt and finishes around 11.30. Might just miss the training and get the dogs sorted on their favorite walk

How am I going to micromanage Meeko regarding 1080?!
I'll try to give her a lecture like "if something looks like food, smells like food and tastes like food, it's not food".

sorry, ski weekend that weekend so out of town

    June 17, 2014

is it that steep? I want to go on the shorter one, I hope someone else is also going on that one?

      1 · June 19, 2014

Bugger! I have something on that afternoon and unfortunately can't join you. Thanks Pam for the reminder re the 1080 - it is important that we all have an awareness of this. Enjoy the day! :-)

Bennie & I know this track well. Will choose McKenzie track as we live only a few doors away. Worth noting that there is 1080 used in this area, so dogs off lead need to be closely monitored and kept on the track in case there are possum carcasses around. See you Sun. Pam
