131207 Day Trip to Young to participate in Cherry Festival

We will meet in Gold Creek at 9.00am which will facilitate car pooling as it can be finalized at Gold Creek on the morning of the trip to Young. I ask people without cars who can not get to Gold Creek to post a comment seeking a lift from their suburb to Gold Creek and I ask people coming from that area to offer them a lift to Gold Creek.

Getting to Young by Road

Young is situated on the A41 (Olympic Highway) and is less than 2 hours drive from the Canberra area. Click on Canberra to view Canberra-Young Route Map.

From Canberra travel north via the A25 (Barton Highway) and join the M32 (Hume Highway) at Yass. Take the signs for Gundagai/Melbourne and take the B81 (Lachlan Valley Way) exit marked Boorowa and Cowra. Follow signs to Young.

Young Visitors Information Centre

This is located in the Old Railway Station, Lovell Street, Young.

Where we meet in Young

We could look at having some refreshments when we arrive in Young at KFC which is at the corner of Lovell and Zouch Streets in Young.

Parking will be at a premium. We will need to find a meeting point which is away from the busiest venues for the festival, park where we can and walk to the meeting point we have chosen before joining in the festival activities.

I am open to suggestions.

Young is the place to be during the Cherry season. The National Cherry Festival is celebrating its 64th Anniversary in 2013 and has many new events planned. Young receives thousands of visitors from Australia and beyond during the festival, providing the opportunity to the community of Young – also known as the Cherry Capital of Australia – to celebrate not only the cherry season and harvest (November-December), but the strong sense of pride that exists within the town. The Street Parade is held on the Saturday, 7th of December. Other highlights of the festival include the Celtic Tattoo, Cherry Festival Carnival, Bush Poets, markets & stalls and much more.

Hi, I'm not sure whether the arrangement is we turn up on the day at Gold Creek where we'll do carpooling arrangements. Or are we pre-arranging who's going with whom now?

  • Veena R.

Hi Lynden - do you still have a seat available in your car? Whereabouts do you live? I'm in Jerrabomberra and could drive across to your place to catch a lift with you.

  • Bob E.

Hi Erick - I ask someone coming through from the Tuggeranong, Weston Creek or Woden area to offer you a lift from Anderson Street in Chifley. However, if you need to use buses, bus 900 from Woden Bus Interchange at 7.10am will get you to Civic Bus Interchange at 7.25am and bus 951 from Civic Bus Interchange at 7.40am will get you to Federation Square (O'Hanlon Place) at 8.31am. The car park opposite Cockington Green where we are meeting up for the trip to Young is beside O'Hanlon Place.

  • Bob E.

I can walk across to the Belconnen Bus Interchange and catch Bus 951 at 8.23am and be at Federation Square (Gold Creek) by 8.39am and participate in the car pool which people can arrange from there.

are there any plans in car pooling? I'm in the north of Canberra (Gungahlin area) and even though I have a car, I'd prefer not to take it long distance as there's some problems with it. So, if there's anyone who has a spare seat in their car, I'd like to come with you and more than happy to contribute to petrol costs. Thanks in advance.
