A Walk Around the Mosaic Stairway (North of West Portal)

Now open for RSVPs. This is one of our most popular walks and it is the most inspirational walk. We meet in front of a Starbucks, that has 2 restrooms, about 1 block West of the West Portal Muni Station, cross street is Vicente. One can take the K, L, M or S lines to reach the station. Remember to either bring a sack lunch or buy one at our starting point. At 11:10 AM or later we will walk.

We will walk through the wonderful Forest Hill neighborhood over many stairways including the giant Pacheco Grand Staircase. For years we ate our sack lunches inside the Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park. On August 7th, 2010, the SF Board of Supervisors started charging $7 for non-residents to enter the Botanical Gardens. On April 12th, 2011, the Supervisors voted to 6 to 5 to keep the fees. WE LOST OUR LONGTIME FREE PICNIC LUNCH SPOT BY JUST ONE VOTE! So we are forced to eat our lunches in another part of Golden Gate Park. Let's work to end the fees in the coming months.

More about the new Botanical Garden fees in the links below:

Then we walk South to and up the Mosaic Stairway, the only one in the City and decorated by over 300 neighbors. It is the most inspirational thing I ever saw. An ordinary neighborhood got together and did something world spectacular! Maybe every USA community can together do something spectacular. Then up to the top of Grand View Park, altitude 666', to see incredible views. Then we walk South taking a different route back through Forest Hill to our starting point. I estimate the walking distance at 6 miles and our ending time at 4:00 PM.

I try to discourage people from driving to SF, but if you need to drive there is plenty of available free street parking in nearby St. Francis Wood neighborhood during the weekends.

Below is a view of the Mosaic Stairway.

I liked this walk. West Portal is a great place to start and end because of all the great places to grab a bite. I love Forest Hills and I have never been there until now. The houses are gardens were beautiful. We had perfect weather. The staircase was amazing - even better then I imagined. Even with 70 walkers we kept together as a group. Thank you Howard!

We had this time the biggest ever turnout for this Mosaic Stairway Walk, 71, which slowed us down and we reached the endpoint at 4:25 PM, 25 minutes late. However, we arrived at the bottom of the stairway of the future "Hidden Garden Steps" a few minutes before the estimated 2:30 PM arrival time I gave to the Hidden Garden Steps representatives who wanted to meet us there. They gave us fine presentations and written materials of this future great mosaic stairway that is expected to be completed in 2013.

Whats the parking situation like in the area? Is there public parking near the starting point, don't know the area all that well.

I answered that question above. "I try to discourage people from driving to SF, but if you need to drive there is plenty of available free street parking in nearby St. Francis Wood neighborhood during the weekends."

Thanks Howard, sorry I must have missed your message. Yes for me It a must to drive in to the city as I like to drive to other photo friendly places while in the city and I know their plenty of those (I'm a bit of a shutterbug in training). I know it can be a pain at times. Thanks for the tip. Will see you tomorrow.

Hey Marcelle, you seem like a reputable person! I live in Alameda but alas I will need my own car to go somewhere else afterward. See you this Sat!

I would like to reach out to the participants of this walk... If any of you coming from the east bay (Alameda, Oakland, or Berkeley), let's plan on a carpool... Let me know.
I live in Alameda and my car can fit four passengers!

Carpooling in Meetup is much more dangerous than it looks. To new members especially it looks like everybody knows everybody in Meetup when the reality is the opposite. Both, the organizers & Meetup.com do not know who the members are. 80% of my members have not shown up to even one of my events. Members post fake photos, fake names, fake everything. Meetup is just as dangerous as Craigs List where people were robbed, raped & murdered. The only difference is Craigs List is bigger.

Neighbors of another nearby staircase are working with the same artists who did the Moraga Street mosaic to create the Hidden Garden Steps mosaic (which I think you will climb on this walk). If you are inspired, please help us dedicate a portion of the mosaic to honor firefighters. See our Indiegogo campaign: http://igg.me/at/firefightersteps As a bonus, the next 12 people who pledge $20 or more also will get the 2013 consumer guide, "Charged Up! The Definitive Guide to Electric Vehicles."

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
