The Mount Olympus + 4 More Hills Walk (Starting Near the 16th St. BART Station)

  • El Cafetazo

    3087 16th St
(between Caledonia St & Valencia St)
    San Francisco, CA (map)

  • I am tall, look like my photo, wear a big hat, and will be carrying a clipboard.
  • Now open for RSVPs. Formerly called the "5 Hills Walk" it takes us to the most hidden and the least known good places in SF. One should bring a sack lunch. We meet near the 16th Street BART Station at El Cafetazo, a cafe that comes highly recommended by the SF Public Health Department, but does not fix sandwiches or other lunches. $3 cash per adult & kids free.

We plan to start walking at 11:10 AM up 16th Street. We will turn left to take a look at Mission Dolores. Then we continue up 16th to the FREE Randall Junior Museum, and then over Corona Heights, 510'. Then we walk through the lovely Ashbury Heights neighborhood and up to the top of Mount Olympus, 570', where we plan to eat our sack lunches. Then we will walk to facilities close to the U. C. Medical Center on Parnassus for a restroom and drink stop.

Then we walk on Mount Sutro and close to the Sutro Tower on Clarendon Heights. Then we walk to the top of Tank Hill, 650', with views that rival those of the much higher Twin Peaks. Then we visit the lovely Vulcan stairway garden. Then we go back near the Randall Junior Museum for our last restroom break, before we walk to our endpoint, the underground Castro Street Muni Station. The walk should end at 4:00 PM. Our starting point is not far away.

Even most native San Franciscans are ignorant of this area of SF, around Mount Olympus. It has the same things that the famous part of the city has: hills with spectacular views, many stairways, beautiful gardens with flowers, and even a hidden forest. However, it does not have tourists. One neighborhood we will visit has some unusual street names such as Uranus, Saturn and Mars, along with a stairway garden named Vulcan. Did a Star Trek fan name these streets? We boldly go where no tourist has ever gone.

For public transportation below is a link to a trip planner provided by government:

I love that Howard makes us climb an endless amount of stairs. It's like going to the gym twice in one day .
