The Marina/Cow Hollow Neighborhoods Walk

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Now open for RSVPs. The only cost is $3 cash per adult. The first half of this walk is very easy. First it is downhill to Fort Mason where we will eat our sack lunches. Then it is completely flat for a long way to our half-way point at the Palace of Fine Arts. Then comes the hard part as we go uphill heading East and South back to our starting point. One may leave the walk early without penalty.

Our starting point is on the sidewalk on California Street outside of a Whole Foods Market. There is a cafe there called "Steep Brew Coffee." Bring a sack lunch or buy one at the Whole Foods or another spot nearby. This walk was changed 2 years ago to give most of us a more convenient starting/ending point. After 11:10 AM we will start walking North on Franklin St.

We will pause at the great Haas-Lilienthal Mansion on Franklin St. Then we will walk by some other interesting old mansions such as one of the 2 remaining octagon houses in San Francisco. We will visit a beautiful community garden full of flowers. We plan to eat our lunch outside in Fort Mason and see historic sites, such as the site of the home of John C. Fremont & Jessie Benton Fremont.

Then we will walk West along a big yacht harbor to the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts. Then we will walk East and see interesting sights such as the magnificent Casebolt House and the Russian Consulate. Then we walk South to our starting point arriving about 4:00 PM.

Below is a link to a mansion we will walk by that may still be for sale. Asking price was $6,695,000. Some experts say it is worth 4 to 5 million:
