The Mount Olympus + 4 More Walk (Starting Near the 16th Street BART Station)

Now open for RSVPs. Free walk. BIG GROUP WARNING to all who dislike a big group. I won't be at the start of this walk. It will be led by Gary M. and he will have clip boards with sign up sheets and be handing out name tags. He also usually wears a big cool hat much like mine. Formerly called the "5 Hills Walk" it takes us to the most hidden and the least known good places in SF. One should bring a sack lunch. We meet near the 16th Street BART Station at El Cafetazo, a cafe that comes highly recommended by the SF Public Health Department, but does not fix sandwiches or other lunches.

We plan to start walking at 11:10 AM up 16th Street. We will turn left to take a look at Mission Dolores. Then we continue up 16th to the FREE Randall Junior Museum, and then over Corona Heights, 510'. Then we walk through the lovely Ashbury Heights neighborhood and up to the top of Mount Olympus, 570', where we plan to eat our sack lunches. Then we will walk to facilities close to the U. C. Medical Center on Parnassus for a restroom and drink stop.

Then we walk on Mount Sutro and close to the Sutro Tower on Clarendon Heights. Then we walk to the top of Tank Hill, 650', with views that rival those of the much higher Twin Peaks. Then we visit the lovely Vulcan stairway garden. Then walk to a park for our last restroom break, near the Randall Junior Museum, right before we walk to our endpoint, the underground Castro Street Muni Station. The walk should end at 4:00 PM. Our starting point is not far away.

Even most native San Franciscans are ignorant of this area of SF, around Mount Olympus. It has the same things that the famous part of the city has: hills with spectacular views, many stairways, beautiful gardens with flowers, and even a hidden forest. However, it does not have tourists. One neighborhood we will visit has some unusual street names such as Uranus, Saturn and Mars, along with a stairway garden named Vulcan. Did a Star Trek fan name these places? We boldly go where no tourist has ever gone.

For a share at $50K each, We will also be able to each use the property for 5 days per year based on a time share basis!! The hike coupled with our unplanned visit to the open house was such a blast! Thanks so much Howard for scheduling and Gary for leading this fun and strenuous hike!

$3.5 mil divided into about 70 people on the walk. We would only have to pay $50,000.

Gary deserves special recognition for leading this walk despite never having been on this walk.

I agree that using a busy hospital lobby as restroom stop was probably not a good idea. But the hike was amazing. I think we should do it again and next time go all the way to the top of Mount Sutro.

I liked this walk, Gary did a good job. Just not sure it was a good idea to make a hospital a restroom stop for 70 people. Also, we forgot to take a group picture.

My first walk with the group and it was great. Thank you Gary and thank you everyone for making this a wonderful day.
PS I particularly like the walk-through of the 3.5million dollar house. Has anyone made an offer yet?

This last photo looks like a place that's a bit treacherous! And quite a lot of elevation. Hope I can make all the climbs.

    August 22, 2013

    • Howard S.

The last photo is of the very top of Corona Heights where we do not go as a group. Individuals decide if they want to go up there.

    Howard, I have a question.
How is parking near the meeting place?

    August 19, 2013

    • Howard S.

I urge attendees always to take public transportation into SF and never drive there. My personal opinion is that the Mission District is not a good place to park your car on the street unless your car is a wreck. I don't know about parking garages, but here is a link I found on parking there:

Carpooling in Meetup is much more dangerous than it looks. To new members especially it looks like everybody knows everybody in Meetup when the reality is the opposite. Both, the organizers & Meetup.com do not know who the members are. 80% of my members have not shown up to even one of my events. Members post fake photos, fake names, fake everything. Meetup is just as dangerous as Craigs List where people were robbed, raped & murdered. The only difference is Craigs List is bigger.

Howard, thank you for your reply. Very helpful comments. Being very new to this whole Meetup concept explains my naivety. Again thank you.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
