A Walk Around the 2 Mosaic Stairways (North of West Portal)

Now open for RSVPs. Free walk. This is the 1st time we do this walk since it was improved with the opening of the new "Hidden Garden Steps" giving us 2 Mosaic Stairways instead of one. This is one of our most popular walks and it is our most inspirational walk. We meet in front of a Starbucks, that has 2 restrooms, about 1 block West of the West Portal Muni Station, cross street is Vicente. One can take the K, L, or M lines to reach the station. Remember to either bring a sack lunch or buy one at our starting point. At 11:10 AM or later we will walk.

We will walk through the wonderful Forest Hill neighborhood over many stairways including the giant Pacheco Grand Staircase. For years we ate our sack lunches inside the Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park. On August 7th, 2010, the SF Board of Supervisors started charging $7 for non-residents to enter. So we are forced to eat our lunches in another part of the G. G. Park. I will work to end the fees in the coming months.

More about the new Botanical Garden fees in the links below:

Then we walk South to and up the "Hidden Gardens Steps" and the "Mosaic Stairway," the only 2 in the City and decorated by hundreds of neighbors. They are the most inspirational thing I ever saw. An ordinary neighborhood got together and did something world spectacular! Maybe every community can together do something spectacular. Then up to the top of Grand View Park, elevation 666', to see incredible views. Then we walk South taking a different route back through Forest Hill to our starting point. Hopefully arriving at 4:00 PM.

I try to discourage people from driving to SF, but if you need to drive there is plenty of available free street parking in nearby St. Francis Wood neighborhood during the weekends.

Below is a view of the Mosaic Stairway.

Photos below were taken on this walk's route.

Hi Howard. Can you share the map of the way we walked. I want to save it. I have the habit of saving all my walk, long motorcycle/car driving.

No. I will put all the walks into a book, sell the book, and buy a new car. We will do this walk again Saturday, March 22nd, because of popular demand.

A very enjoyable day! I loved climbing the mosaic stairs, walking through the neighborhoods with beautiful homes and gardens. The pace was just right and Kudos to Howard for planning this route and timing it so perfectly. Very nice group of friendly people.

Despite having a big group of 80 attendees we arrived at our endpoint only 2 minutes late. The weather looked like May instead of February. We took over a men's restroom for our many women who were waiting in line. Then a mailman showed up and we had to stop him for awhile from going inside.

Another great walk organized by Howard!! It felt great to be walking again with the group of Walking in San Francisco for Health and History after a long absence and meet amazing people while at the same time absorbing the most beautifull views and scenery that San Francisco and the great weather offered us today.
Looking forward for the next walk!!!!

I apologize for changing my RSVP to NO again, but my mother has been sick (as a matter of fact, she's been hospitalized for 8 days), and she needs my time and attention right now. Hoping to attend the next one. Thanks for understanding.

We don't have a walk next weekend. Our next walk is 2 weeks later. Next weekend, Saturday, is the first meeting of my new Meetup group to end the $7 entry fees to the Botanical Garden. The new group is called "Free Parks for Everyone (Rollback Park Privatization)!"
