A Walk in SF Golden Gate Park (Around, but not inside the Botanical Garden)

Now open for RSVPs. Free walk. At 11:30 AM we will be in front of the entrance to the gardens on 9th Avenue. We plan to start walking about 11:40 AM and eat lunch about 12:50 PM at the Music Concourse. Bringing a sack lunch is advised. The sad part is that now we can not go inside the Botanical Gardens because of the new entrance fee for non residents. We used to eat our sack lunches inside there when we did our "Mosaic Stairway Walk," but are now forced to detour to another part of the park to eat lunch. Also, 2 restrooms were taken from us as they are on the other side of the kiosk demanding money.

There are 2 tiny restrooms inside the Botanical Garden Library where entrance is still free. There are also 2 restrooms available inside of the nearby old State Fair Building. This is the first time we do a Golden Gate Park walk!

We will visit many of the most interesting parts of Golden Gate Park including the outside of those places that used to be free, but now charge admission, such as the Conservatory of Flowers and the Japanese Tea Garden. It will be partly a tour of what has been taken away from the general public by some big money interests. There are some free places we hope to visit also such as the Shakespeare Garden, the Music Concourse, a few artificial waterfalls, Stow Lake, Strawberry Hill, Spreckles Lake, and walk hidden paths. We expect to end at our starting point at about 4:30 PM. Distance about 5 miles.

More places in the park may now be charging fees than I know about. Golden Gate Park is becoming Golden Pay Park. If coming on BART transfer to the underground Muni light rail at any of the BART stations on Market Street. Then get on the "N" line and get off right before 9th Avenue. There is a Starbucks on the corner and I think there is only one restroom there. In the coming days before the walk I will scout out the walk and put up photos and more text information.

Rowena and I enjoyed this walk, even though we didn't do the whole walk. This was our first walk with Howard and we hope to do more in the future. Thanks Howard !

I enjoyed the walk. It was physically challenging but not too strenuous. Howard kept us going at a steady pace. We covered a lot of territory and saw some incredible sites. Thanks group. It was fun!

I never lead a walk in GG Park before because I thought it was well explored and I lead walks to the little known areas of SF. I discovered that this park has many trails and places that are little known. I did not know just days ago that it has 3 waterfalls. We visited all 3.

We arrived back at our starting point at 4:20 PM, only 10 minutes early so we could not have reached the Wind Mill. We could have done the others, but unfortunately as it is Winter the Redwood Forest had muddy trails and the rose bushes had practically no flowers. After a few weeks from now that could be a good area to walk.

Well, I tried to be there, got to BART Pittsburg at 9:50, sign posted up to 40 min delays, train finally arrives, I get on, it just sits there, looked at the time, it was already 10:20, I would have never made it on time, so I got off the train. On top of that when I left the station it deducted $ from my clipper card! Station agent was kind enough to reimburse me the cash deducted. Guess it was just not meant to be, you all have fun!

The member events are only for their members and so SF residents do not then get entry to the Garden unless they are members. SF residents are cheated too. This comes from privatization of parks. To end the fees and park privatization join Free Parks for Everyone. http://www.meetup.com...

Chiropractors orders take baby steps...Is this walk appropriate for people with spine problems?

    March 7, 2014

    • Howard S.

This walk will have some uphill and downhill walking. You must go by what your doctor says. I am not a doctor. In our group description it says that these walks are for people in average physical shape and not for athletes or people with serious medical problems.

As a SF resident, I can still go through the arboretum for free and did so a couple of weeks ago. It's really sad to see this once vibrant city resource now nearly empty..no families visiting the ducks or picnicking. A really shameful situation.

ANYONE can go in for free through the back gates Mon. to Sat. until 2:30 PM or so.

You should tell this to our SF Supervisors. Here is the most complete thing I have written about this:

    Howard,

The gates behind the Hall of Flowers (at the parking lot on Lincoln) are open, so you could take people for a quick spin through to see how empty the place is now that they charge $7 admission...

This is the 1st time we do this walk. If you miss it don't worry as I will have us do it again soon. It might even be better the 2nd time.
