A Walk in SF Golden Gate Park (Around, but not inside the Botanical Garden)

Now open for RSVPs. Free walk. This is only the 2nd time that we do this new walk. At 11:30 AM we will be in front of the entrance to the gardens on 9th Avenue. We plan to start walking about 11:40 AM. One should bring a sack lunch. First, we will walk to the Shakespeare Garden and then to the Conservatory of Flowers. Then we will walk to our lunch spot, the Music Concourse. where we expect to arrive before 1:00 PM. If a big event is happening there we may have to detour to another spot.

We will NOT go inside the Botanical Garden. We do not go inside the Botanical Garden because of the new $7 entrance fee for non residents. We used to eat our sack lunches inside there when we did our "Mosaic Stairway Walk," but are now forced to detour to another part of the park to eat lunch.

Also, 2 restrooms were taken from us as they are on the other side of the kiosk demanding money. People should BOYCOTT paying the fee!

There are 2 tiny restrooms inside the Botanical Garden Library where entrance is still free. There are also 2 big restrooms available inside of the nearby old State Fair Building. Golden Gate Park is becoming Golden Pay Park.

We will visit many of the most interesting parts of Golden Gate Park including the outside of those places that used to be free, but now charge admission, such as the Conservatory of Flowers and the Japanese Tea Garden. It will be partly a tour of what has been taken away from the general public by some big money interests. There are some free places we hope to visit not mentioned above, three artificial waterfalls, Stow Lake, Strawberry Hill, Spreckles Lake, the Polo Grounds, and miles of hidden paths. We expect to end at our starting point at about 4:30 PM. Distance about 5 miles.

If coming on BART transfer to the underground Muni light rail at any of the BART stations on Market Street. Then get on the "N" line and get off right before 9th Avenue. There is a Starbucks on the corner and I think there is only one restroom there.

We had perfect weather, but a little mud from the previous day's rain. Near the walk's end most of the group followed Gary to visit the top of the de Young Museum's tower and the minority followed me back to our starting point arriving there exactly at our posted end time of 4:30 PM.

People should know that behind the County Fair Building (Hall of Flowers, a venue that botanical groups are now finding expensive to exhibit at) there is a parking lot, and one can enter the domain of the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society through a gate that is usually open until around 3 PM from Monday to Saturday, when the gardeners and Society blueblooded volunteers enter without paying or showing an ID.

This is at 10th and Lincoln.

Sad to hear what you said about carpooling..but, thank you. I will heed your words.

Carpooling in Meetup is much more dangerous than it looks. To new members especially it looks like everybody knows everybody in Meetup when the reality is the opposite. Both, the organizers & Meetup.com do not know who the members are. 80% of my members have not shown up to even one of my events. Members post fake photos, fake names, fake everything. Meetup is just as dangerous as Craigs List where people were robbed, raped & murdered. The only difference is Craigs List is bigger.
