A Sunday Walk to Oakland's Rose Garden & Piedmont's Mansions

Now open for RSVPs. The only cost is $3 cash per adult. Kids free. We will start at a new cafe called Tierra Mia Coffee, on the corner of Broadway & 20th Street, so people on BART should go to the 19th Street BART Station and then they should exit at the 20th Street exit and our starting point is right across the street. One may bring a sack lunch or buy one at Tierra Mia Coffee or Whole Foods Market. I want at least some of our attendees to buy drinks or something there and give tips so they will like us.

Below is a link to Tierra Mia:

At 10:40 AM we will walk North on Broadway, East on Grand, & North on Harrison to the giant Whole Foods Market. We plan to eat lunch about Noon at Oakland's Morcom Rose Garden. If something such as a wedding prevents us from eating there we will eat later at the Piedmont Park.

Our SF mansions walk is super popular. Oakland today is unjustly famous for nothing but poverty and crime. However, Oakland like San Francisco, has wealthy areas as well as poor ones. We will walk in some of the good places in Oakland and Piedmont. Inside Oakland is the town of Piedmont which used to, 1920's, have more millionaires per square mile than any other place in the USA. Piedmont used to be a city of super rich Republicans and now it is a city of ordinary rich Democrats. Piedmont looks as good now as then. All of the mansions are still there in all of their glory with flowers and gardens.

There are historic sites that we will see in Oakland such as the former home of former Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Earl Warren, and the former home of the once famous entertainer Al Jolson, who was the star of the first talking movie. We end the walk at the 19th Street BART Station about 4:20 PM.

Those who went with me all the way to our endpoint got there at 4:35 PM. We were slow because we had a big group. It was a warm to hot day but people could cool off in Piedmont in the shade with ice cream and cold drinks sold there.

Hi Howard. I only made it as far as the church. I decided not to continue since I couldn't do the entire walk anyway. Thank you for organizing the walks. The two I've completed I've enjoyed - a lot.

People may join us at the Rose Garden, but I might take the group photo before then and they might miss it. We will not enter from the Oakland Avenue side, but we will leave on that side. We will enter from the little known Chetwood Street entrance, then walk to the old house of Al Jolson before returning to the Rose Garden to eat our sack lunches.

Hi Howard my husband and I greatly enjoyed the walk yesterday and would like to consider this walk in Oakland. But could you include always the level of difficulty? hills? climbing? it is helpful for us. Thanks and see you very soon. we are fans! It was wonderful. We walked a total of 5 miles. YES!

This walk goes up from Oakland to Piedmont's Piedmont's Sea View Ave. It is a fairly high climb. It is slightly easier than yesterday's walk if you did the entire walk yesterday especially Diamond Heights.

About how long is this walk, i.e., how many miles? And is this the garden that's one block to the right of Oakland Avenue?

    May 11, 2014

    • Howard S.

Yes it is next to Oakland Ave and the distance is around 6 miles.
