The North/West Coast of San Francisco Walk

  • Jun 23, 2012 · 11:30 AM
  • Palace of Fine Arts

Now open for RSVPs. It is 6 miles of incredible beautiful views starting from the Palace of Fine Arts to the Cliff House and then goes up Sutro Heights. The only cost is $2 cash for adults and kids are free. We will stay on the "Coastal Trail" all the way to the Cliff House. One should bring a sack lunch and it would also be good to bring water and paper towels. The only bad thing is it takes a long time to order a drink at the Cliff House.

We will meet at 11:30 AM on the grass at the corner of Baker St & Bay St, the South-East corner of the Palace of Fine Arts. I used to bring blue colored balloons for people to find us, but I now think we are easy to spot. We look like a group of walkers: walking shoes, small back packs, and some of us even wear hats. We will probably be wearing white name tags. I am tall and plan to be wearing a green hat for this event and to have clipboards for people to print their names on.

At about 11:45 PM we will start walking North on the East side of the pond to get to the big restrooms at the Palace of Fine Arts. Then about Noon, we will start walking through Crissy Field following the trail near the coast towards the Golden Gate Bridge. To avoid a possible huge line at the women's restroom in the bridge's view area we will use the restrooms near Fort Point before going to the bridge. Late people may try and meet us at the bridge view area about 1:30 PM.

About 1:40 PM we will leave the bridge and continue our walk on the "Coastal Trail." We plan to eat our sack lunches at a bunker/battery on the trail about 1:50 PM. Then we continue walking to the Cliff House. After the Cliff House we will walk to the top of Sutro Heights. Estimated walk ending time is 5:00 PM. Then most of us will take the 38 bus heading towards downtown SF. Do bring kids and cameras, but please don't bring dogs or other animals.

Below is a trip planner that will show you how to get around the Bay Area on public transportation. However one cannot count on buses to be on time:

All photos below are in the order of what we will see on the walk.

There is a police fighting gangsters movie from the 1950s called "The Lineup" that was filmed on location in San Francisco including near the Cliff House & inside the Sutro Baths that burned down in 1966. Below is a link to watch that movie for free:

We had a couple unexpected things slow us so that we ended 15 minutes late. A couple of swans had 6 babies & our group looked & took photos. Then I stepped in a hole causing me to fall, skin my right knee & rip my pants one inch. Fortunately I was able to keep walking. The Coastal Trail has been massively renovated since we walked it before. We saw a new big building near the Cliff House & I found out later it is the new Coastal Trail Visitor Center. We didn't have time to visit it.

A great walk with unbelievable weather! Howard is very well organized and pretty much hits his various destinations according to the times in his itinerary. This was my first hike with Howard, and I plan taking more...a great way to enjoy SF!

That was as nice a hike as I've taken in San Francisco. Thank you, Howard, for setting it up!

I advise strongly to bring a map of SF. To find out how to get from one place to another on public transportation one may click on the "Trip Planner" provided by government that I have listed in this event's description above here. Below is another link to it.

If taking BART one can get off BART at the Montgomery or Powell Street Station and then walk to 3rd Street to catch the #30 or #45 Muni buses. I would highly recommend walking South on 3rd Street to Howard Street or beyond to board the bus so you can sit on a nice seat. Close to Market Street large numbers board the buses and it can become extremely crowded just before Chinatown. However, if as I say one boards further up one will not be squashed by people when the bus reaches Chinatown.

If we take BART from the Peninsula, how can we get to the meeting place for tomorrow's 6 mile walk? Mary

Carpooling in Meetup is much more dangerous than it looks. To new members especially it looks like everybody knows everybody in Meetup when the reality is the opposite. Both, the organizers & do not know who the members are. 80% of my members have not shown up to even one of my events. Members post fake photos, fake names, fake everything. Meetup is just as dangerous as Craigs List where people were robbed, raped & murdered. The only difference is Craigs List is bigger.

One might find free parking in the parking lot of the Palace of Fine Arts, street parking in the neighborhood, and also at the Marina Green. It might take a while to find a parking space and I always discourage people from driving to SF.

By using Golden Gate Transit, San Rafael residents can leave the San Rafael Transit Center at 10:45 AM. It is expected to arrive at 11:11AM at Richardson Avenue and Lyon Street, a 6 minute walk to the Palace of Fine Arts.
I plan to use the same route to get from downtown San Francisco. I'll take BART from East Bay where I live.

I don't think it is very stroller friendly. We will even be walking on deep sand for part of the way, over at Baker Beach.

    Is the terrain stroller friendly?

How far (approx. mileage) is it from Palace of Legion of H. to Fort Point? Or from end of Marina Green/beginning of Crissy Field to Fort Point?
