The Best Xmas Lights Display in the Bay Area Walk

Now open for RSVPs. Our December walks are free. To prevent a big rain storm from forcing us to cancel our Xmas lights walk we are scheduling it for 4 days, 2 weekends. Then we can cancel once or more & still do it. The Xmas lights display starts when it gets dark, 5:15 PM.

Everyone should bring at least one electric light for safety (from cars especially) and to help us find each other in the dark. Also, attendees may bring food to snack on or for a late lunch at our 2:35 PM restroom break at Franklin Park.

We meet in front of the library on Oak Street at 1:30 PM. There is a small cafe inside of the library on the first floor where people may congregate before 1:30 PM and buy drinks and snacks. They only have a small number of sandwiches and the sandwiches are small. Cash only. Weather permitting we will see many old mansions and the Bay Area's best Xmas lights display.

On this walk we only have about two places to hide from the rain and the main one is our #1 rendezvous spot, the Alameda Free Library. If no rain it will be an easy walk as well as a wonderful walk as Alameda is completely flat, no hills. No name tags this time as it will be getting dark. Bring an electric light.

Everyone traveling by BART should try to get to the Fruitvale BART Station's 51A bus stop at 1:00 PM. Then get on the 51A bus which is scheduled to arrive at 1:04 PM. The next and later 51A buses are scheduled to arrive every 15 minutes. The 51A bus should arrive at Santa Clara and Oak Street in exactly 7 minutes. Get off the bus at that bus stop and walk one block North to the big new Alameda Free Library. Our meeting time is 1:30 PM, but some will be arrive early and others late.

Some attendees may use the 51A bus coming in the opposite direction. Below is a link to AC Transit 51A bus schedule & map: http://www.actransit....

Below is a link to a map where the library is: http://maps.google.co...

Free street parking spaces are within walking distance of the library. If it is not raining, about 1:45 PM we will leave the library and go South on Oak Street one block to the big granite staircase of Alameda's old City Hall which is next to the previously mentioned bus stop at the NW corner of Santa Clara & Oak arriving about 1:50 PM, weather permitting, to take a group photo. Look below to see photos of the old City Hall.

We then walk to the small Alameda Museum just to show everyone where it is. To stay on schedule we will then walk West on Central Avenue to Franklin Park and on the way look at many big old houses. We hope to reach Franklin Park at 2:45 PM, our restroom stop. As the restrooms are not very big we will probably spend almost half an hour there which will give attendees enough time to eat a late lunch. Then we will walk back East along Clinton Avenue.

However, if we are hit with heavy rain on the way to Franklin Park we may walk to the Alameda Towne Centre (South Shore Shopping Center). Around Franklin Park we will see even bigger houses, mansions. Then we walk back to the library, trying to arrive at 4:30 PM.

At 5:00 PM we plan to walk to the big X-mas lights display and arrive at 5:25 PM. For any questions about traveling the Bay Area on public transportation click on the trip planner link below: http://tripplanner.tr...

The walk ends back at the library about 6:15 PM.

Our #1 rendezvous spot, the Alameda Free Library. Restrooms are on the 1st and 2nd floors. City Hall below, where we will if not raining take a group photo. Closeup of the City Hall steps where we may take a group photo. If an Xmas Tree is there we may take the photo from above. Below is the large library front that gives complete rain shelter. Below is a tiny portion of the many Xmas lights we plan to see. A couple of the mansions we will see on our walk. Just one of the many giant houses in Alameda. One more old Alameda mansion, but just showing the entrance. Just one of the many giant houses in Alameda. Another one of the many giant houses in Alameda.

Though the skies were gray all day there was no rain until 10 minutes after our walk's ending time of 6:15 PM. Everything went according to plan and a bunch of good photos were uploaded here.

    Is there ample parking?

    December 14, 2012

    • Howard S.

Yes, usually. However, the later in the afternoon the harder it will be to find parking as when it gets dark thousands of people will be coming to see the lights and taking parking spaces.

Would like some company walking back to the BART station after this event on Dec 16th. Is anybody else taking BART?

I have on the event description above that it is a 7 minute bus ride between our starting point & the Fruitvale BART Station. Do not try walking back to the Fruitvale BART Station, especially at night.

I'm coming from Lake Merritt area in Oakland so will just get on bus 51A. Don't need to get on BART at all. I'm a visitor to this area so please excuse the ignorance. Thanks.
