This walk starts and finishes from Winchester train station. Winchester is steeped in history and we will be exploring all the main points of interest including Winchester cathedral and the college. The idyllic River Itchen will lead us to the iron age hillfort of St Catherines Hill, where we will see spectacular views of the city. With ancient water meadows, downlands and time to rest for lunch in a pub along the way.
The walk is about 8.5 miles with a couple of steep ascents otherwise mainly level.
Winchester is a cathedral city steeped in history. It was founded by the Romans close to a major iron age hillfort (which we will see), it was the capital of the Saxon kingdom of Wessex under Alfred the Great and a major royal city under medieval kings. It has some rather pretty streets too.
