Meeting and Talk: Strangers in the Night (Close Encounters of the Stellar Kind)

The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the third Thursday in a room in the library (Building J) at Macomb Community College's South Campus. We will meet in our normal meeting room, J221; enter through the front doors. We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members.

Dave Bailey will give the presentation, entitled “Strangers in the Night (Close Encounters of the Stellar Kind)”.  Dave will be discussing the risks of stars that may have passed near our solar system in the past.  Red dwarves are especially numerous and pose a relatively large risk, past and future.  He will also discuss the risks from nearby supernovas, planetary nebulae, etc.

Dave is well-known in this organization for giving challenging and sometimes perplexing presentations with some physics content.  This is a major activity of his - some might even wonder if it borders on an addiction!  Dave says that he was in astronomy before he was born, as his parents met as graduate students at the Yerkes Observatory in the 1930s.  He also studied under Carl Sagan and other leading astronomers at Harvard.

Thank you for a very informative meeting. I learned a lot and appreciated all the effort that went into preparing for the presentation. Applebee's was nice because I had an opportunity to ask some questions too.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
