$10.00 at your first meetup
Why: Cost of meetup.com + Light refreshments for the year (Sep '09 - Aug '10)
I have created this book club for a smart, leaderly, focused, and open-minded group of ethnically diverse women in their 20s and 30s that choose to continually work on their personal growth and development as leaders, managers, and as people; this book club is for women who see self-improvement not just as a quick fix, but as a way of life.
Are you tired of feeling like you're the only enlightened or conscious person in your social circle or workplace? Do you wish you had a reading buddy who would be just as excited as you to devour John Maxwell's latest manuscript on leadership or the latest social commentary star-rater on GoodReads.com? Are you constantly suggesting books to your partner, friend, or co-worker, that you think may be helpful but are getting scoffed at for relying too much on 'books' (god forbid) for guidance?
I have frequently found myself amongst friends and associates who don't read non-fiction as vigorously as I do - particularly from the management, leadership, self-help, and self-improvement sections, and I'd like to meet more people who are as enthusiastic about improving their lives via reading as I am. I have read and continue to read authors like John Maxwell, Dale Carnegie, Florence Littauer, Gary Chapman, David Schwartz, Lois P. Frankel and much more. My hope is to meet people who will help me expand my bookshelf, but also make some really fun, smart, and savvy friends in the process.
For starters, we will be focusing on the following topics, but will expand/modify this list depending on the members that join:
* Leadership
* Management
* Personality Typing
* Interpersonal/Professional Skills (e.g. Emotional Intelligence, Public Speaking etc)
* Social Commentary
* Other Topics Depending on Group Interest
THIS BOOK CLUB IS FOR YOU IF YOU ARE:
* In your 20s or 30s
* Diversity-conscious, queer-friendly, and generally open-minded; I want this to be a safe space for all kinds of people (i.e. diverse in gender presentation, ethnic background, and age)
* An avid reader of self-help/self-improvement books in the areas of leadership, people management, personality typing, social commentary, and/or peripheral topics
* A good listener, and a good contributor to conversations (we need a balance of both!)
* Not allergic to cats (in the beginning, the book club will be held at my apartment in Somerville, and I have 3 of them, sorry :-\)
MEETING DATES, LOCATION, AND READING MATERIAL:
* Book Club Meetups will be scheduled ONCE a month on the LAST TUESDAY of each month
* Book Club Meetups will be hosted at my home in Somerville
* The Book Title will be announced within 2 days after the meetup
* I will try to keep the book selections within the 150-300 page range so that this doesn't feel like a class :o)
* There will be one discussion facilitator for each group meeting
* Meetups will be scheduled for 1.5 hours, which will hopefully be enough time to do the following:
-- Introductions
-- Hear the 'volunteered' opening statement/thoughts about the book
-- Engage in lively, passionate, and respectul discussion
-- Close the meetup with thoughts for practical application
THE RULES (Please Read):
1. Please come prepared. Not reading the book, but still showing up will be obvious and unfair to everyone else.
2. The discussions although preset to my personal guidelines will be open in nature; nothing is off limits as long as it promotes growth within the group.
3. Intolerance, judgment, bigotry, close mindedness and antagonistic skepticism are NOT welcome.
4. Passion, insights, and anecdotes of practical application are VERY welcome.
5. Maximum of 15 per book club gathering to keep it intimate; I prefer quality over quantity :)
6. 3 RSVPs with no shows and no explanations result in membership termination. Likewise for 3 consecutive months of inactivity; if you are unable to attend book club meetings, you are encouraged to post your thoughts/participate in a post-discussion via the online forum
7. There is a $10 membership fee to cover the costs of meetup.com
8. Feel free to bring notepads and pens for note taking, and your dinner/food to share
9. I am very open to suggestions and help from assistant organizers once commitment to the group has been displayed, in the areas of book title suggestions and discussion formats only. The location is fixed and left up to my discretion.
10. Please come ready to share, learn, and grow as women warriors!
If you have any questions at all feel free to send me a message! I hope to hear from you soon.
