With the warm weather, the snow is receding fast...so what better time to hike to Sunset Peak? It will be only days before the full moon, so we can watch the moon come up as the sun goes down - PERFECT!!! The hike to Sunset Peak goes past Lakes Mary, Martha and Catherine. It is about 2,000' vertical climb in a little over 2 miles. The views on top are splendid, especially as the sun sets. Total hiking time will be about 3.5-4 hrs. We will be on top at sunset, so it will be dark on the way down. It is also one of the longest days of light of the year, so it will be late when the sun goes down. Bring a headlamp just in case the moon doesn't brighten the landscape enough.....but it likely will. It will be cool/cold on top, so bring a jacket, water, and insect repellant. This is a fairly strenuous hike....but you don't necessarily have to go to the top. We will definitely want to be at the top by sunset.....so that may require a heavy push near the end.
We will meet at the Big Cottonwood Canyon Park & Ride at 5:45PM for car pooling up the canyon.
It's a Friday night and near a full moon....so let' keep the party going after the hike. After the hike, we can meet at the cabin for mingling/socializing while enjoying some drinks and snacks. BYOB and something tasty to share.
