Howl at the Moon on Sunset Peak

With the warm weather, the snow is receding fast...so what better time to hike to Sunset Peak?  It will be only days before the full moon, so we can watch the moon come up as the sun goes down - PERFECT!!!  The hike to Sunset Peak goes past Lakes Mary, Martha and Catherine.  It is about 2,000' vertical climb in a little over 2 miles.  The views on top are splendid, especially as the sun sets.  Total hiking time will be about 3.5-4 hrs.  We will be on top at sunset, so it will be dark on the way down.  It is also one of the longest days of light of the year, so it will be late when the sun goes down.  Bring a headlamp just in case the moon doesn't brighten the landscape enough.....but it likely will.  It will be cool/cold on top, so bring a jacket, water, and insect repellant.  This is a fairly strenuous hike....but you don't necessarily have to go to the top.  We will definitely want to be at the top by sunset.....so that may require a heavy push near the end.

We will meet at the Big Cottonwood Canyon Park & Ride at 5:45PM for car pooling up the canyon.

It's a Friday night and near a full moon....so let' keep the party going after the hike.  After the hike, we can meet at the cabin for mingling/socializing while enjoying some drinks and snacks.  BYOB and something tasty to share.

Hey Rick , can I invite my friend to hang after since hike is full. My 1st time doing meet up so I thought I would ask :) thanks

    June 20, 2013

    • Rick G.

Yes, we'll be done pretty late since it's one of the longest days of the year. If we stay to watch the sun go down, we probably won't be back down the mountain until about 10:00.

I'm attempted this hike last week (the 12th) and it was too snowy! I'm trying again on Wed. (the 19th). Hopefully the snow has melted. I would love it if someone would email me how your hike turns out. [masked]

There were a few little patches of snow but they were easy to go through or around. Awesome hike! The peak was extremely windy though - could barely stand up straight. I bet it's fantastic to see the views at sunset!

      June 19, 2013

    • Rick G.

Thanks for the info Jennifer. You are right, the views are fantastic during the setting sun and even better with a rising moon. The forecast for Friday shows winds dropping in the evening.....so hopefully, we won't be blown off. But it will still be a little chilly.

Things you need: 1. your widest lens/with the quickest f-stop 2. Tripod/bag to tie to tripod that you can put rocks in to weigh tripod down once we've reached the top 3. A remote helps but if you don't have one you can set your camera to delay 5 seconds to reduce vibration from pushing the shutter button. Or if you have a cannon download the EOS Utility onto your smartphone, Nikon has an app as well

I usually control the camera with my laptop via the usb cable the camera came with so I can see the image immediately after. Hard to see what you've captured on a 3" lcd screen. Feel free to post any questions, I will be checking this page frequently. - Austin

Rick, I hear you on the "too big" group comment. I have been there before several times so I will back out to make the group more manageable. Have fun!

    I'll make a waiting list

Someone can have my spot, is love to attend but it's not going to work out this time

    June 17, 2013

  • Rick G.

This group is getting too big.....I had to limit the size. If you are not 100% sure you are going, please change your status to "not going". The last section of this hike is fairly strenuous, so be prepared for the climb.

If you can't make it to this meetup, the cabin concert on Saturday will be a great event.

A group of us will be backpacking to Lake Catherine earlier on Friday. My friend saw this and shared it with me. We'd like to join you. There could be as many as 10 of us! :)

The hike to Sunset Peak is a little more difficult, but it is well worth it. Getting to Lake Catherine is about the same as hiking to Dog Lake, but then it is a steeper climb up to Sunset Peak....but not that bad......just put it in turbo and go!!!

    June 14, 2013

  • Julie A.

Hiked to Dog Lake from Mill D on Sunday, how does Sunset compare in difficulty?

    June 14, 2013

I can't wait for timing to be right to join in the fun. I love the outdoors & am finally healthy enough to really enjoy. I hope to come to one of the hike/band shows. I love live music outdoors!
