Hike to the Top of the Tram at Snowbird

OK, last Friday was a bust with the mud slides and the afternoon rains, so let's do this thing!!!  We'll meet at the Park & Ride at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon (that's below Snowbird/Alta and NOT by the 7-11 at the mouth of Big).  We'll car pool to Snowbird, regroup on the skier bridge on the tram plaza.  Then, we'll hike up Peruvian Gulch and take the ridge route to the top of the Tram at Snowbird.  This is about 2,900 vertical feet of climbing and will likely take 1.5-2 hrs to reach the top if we hike at a brisk pace.  We have to reach the top before the last tram departs or it will be a long walk back down.  I believe that the last tram down is at about 8:30, but I'll make sure.  The ride down is free if you hike up.

This will be a fairly strenuous hike with the elevation gain and the altitude.  Bring insect repellant, a light jacket because it will likely be cool at the top, water, snacks, and a headlamp just in case it ends up being a long walk down.

Where will the group park the car pool cars? Which parking lot? Or will I see everyone if I'm waiting at the front entrance for skier drop-off (General Grits and Ski shop just inside building, along w/ Medical Clinic).

If I want to meet group up at Snowbird, where should I meet you all, again? The "Bridge near tram??"

    July 9, 2013

    • Rick G.

If you drive on your own, meet us on the skier bridge just off the plaza. We'll look for you.

I know that it is going to be tough for most people to be at the Park & Ride by 5:00. We will depart no later than 5:15 so that we can get on the trail ASAP. If you miss the meetup at the Park & Ride, catch us on the trail. Here is a link to the hiking trails at Snowbird:

We will start at the skier bridge off the tram, then up the Peruvian Gulch Hiking Trail (red) to the Peruvian Gulch Trail (purple) to the Ridge Trail (red). I look forward to seeing everyone tonight. It should be perfect weather for a hike and the wild flowers should be amazing!!!

Just like Marty said. Did this hike on Saturday. Was amazing. Worked really hard to keep my cardio up to get an AMZING workout and be out in the great outdoors. My reward was the view, meeting new friends AND taking the tram down. Well because of the lighting Friday night the tram was shut down. Turned into 4 hour hike and was still a great time.

Rick, the tram was hit by lightening Friday night. It wasn't operating Saturday midday when I was up there. Hope they fixed it! They really didn't have a solid idea when it would be.

Teresa - just tell them that you have more important things to do than sit in a meeting.

Whoops, I posted the wrong date on the initial meetup invitation. It will be THIS Tuesday, not the following Tues. I hope that doesn't mess anyone up.

Whoops.....I made a mistake when I first posted this hike. It will be THIS Tuesday, not the following Tuesday. I hope that doesn't cause any problems.
