Loop Hike to Wolverine Peak

  • Jul 14, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • Gardiner Family Cabin

If people want to meet at the Park & Ride at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon, they should meet at 9:15AM and depart the Park & Ride by 9:30AM to be at the cabin by 10:00AM.  I'll be at the cabin doing final cleanup from the Cabin Concert the night before.  This will be a fairly strenuous hike with probably 2500 vertical feet of climbing and about 6 miles round trip hikinf.  We will hike around the north side of Silver Lake, up to Twin Lakes, to the saddle of Grizzly Gulch, up around the Wolverine Cirque to Wolverine Peak (about 10,800' elevation), across Wolverine Pass, down to Tuscarora Peak, down to Catherine Pass and down past Lakes Catherine, Martha and Mary.  There is a little bit of scrambling on this hike, but nothing technical.

The views from this hike are amazing as you get great views of both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.

Bring snacks and plenty of water to drink.  We will eat the snacks at the top of Wolverine Peak.  After the hike, we can socialize and share treats at the cabin before heading back down the canyon.  So, BYOB and something to share after the hike.

Ah....SUPER hike! If I am running like chicken without a head and cannot feel my leg(s) today...that's because someone cut them off, well, at least parts of them.......in the pictures... ;).

My husband and I are interested in doing this loop hike. We are in our early 50's but don't worry, we are strong hikers! Will you have us or is your group too large? Isn't there a max number of people allowed on hikes in the wilderness? We're excited to meet some new people to hike with! Lee Ann and Jack

Wolverine Peak and everything else on this hike are not in the Wilderness area....plus, typically only about 50%-60% actually show up.

Thanks! Hope the weather holds up for us!

    Are dogs allowed?

    July 13, 2013

    • Chris

Unfortunately no as BCC is a watershed that doesn't allow dogs.

    Which train it is?

    July 13, 2013

    • Rick G.

There are no trains or trax that go to Big Cottonwood Canyon.

      July 13, 2013

  • Viv

Which train is stopping at big cottonwood canyon? I think its better to take the train rather than drive. Anyone knows will train stops in this park & ride?
    Thanks!

Can I carpool on anyone who pass or coming from provo, orem or lehi? Anyone? Let me know the pickup place. Thanks!

  • Kathy F.

Do you know approximately how long (time-wise) of a hike it will be?

    July 9, 2013

    • Rick G.

Whoops, sorry Kathy.....I got this question mixed up with the Snowbird Tram hike. The hike up Wolverine will probably be a total of 6 miles round trip, so it will likely take 3-4 hrs with picture taking and everything.

Thanks! Sounds like a lot of beautiful scenery. I may make the Snowbird hike also, still deciding on that.

      July 9, 2013

  • Rick G.

I have a friend that does it on a regular basis. It takes her 1 hr 26 minutes. So, I'm figuring on 2 hrs for a group.....and we're going to have to boogie to get there in that time. If we don't, it might be another hour hike down.
