  • Sorry folks. We have a conflict so I am cancelling this outing.

    CANCELLED.

My wife and I are attending the CPA SK101 outing near Annapolis on Saturday and decided to stay in Annapolis overnight. Last year we stayed in Annapolis on approximately the same weekend and paddled Sunday morning from Truxton Park. We decided we enjoyed it so much we would like to do it again. This will be a sightseeing paddle. We are going to be checking out all of the cool houses and boats and plan to paddle into and out of all the little fingers on that river. That means while we may paddle 8 miles or so, we will probably never be more than a few miles from Truxton Park itself. If this leisurely sightseeing paddle is not your cup-of-tee, join us another time as I would like to set up a more "destination-oriented" paddle from this location when the water warms up. But given the time of year and the fact that the water will still be very cold and, of course, that the Chesapeake can be unpredictable, I would like to stay close to shore and simply enjoy the company of fellow paddlers and the ambiance of Annapolis.

That being said this will be a typical cold water paddle with almost all of the new "cold water" guidelines that the WKC organizers have come up with (might not bring flares :o) In particular at this moment I am envisioning this as a sea kayak type of paddle so this would be for sea kayaks 12' and longer and you must bring and wear a sprayskirt. As we get closer to the date itself, we will check the weather forecast. If it is predicted to be completely calm, I will add SUPs and might even waive the skirt requirement (though it is always good to bring it just in case) thus allowing open-cockpit recreational kayaks (but at the moment I am limiting it to sea kayaks with skirts until we get closer to March 17th). If the winds are predicted to be above 15 MPH, I will cancel.

Even if everything is predicted to be calm and we allow SUP and open-cockpit kayaks, the rules for cold water clothing will not change no matter what the air tempurature. The water will be in the 40's so the usual requirements for either a 1) drysuit, 2) dry top + dry bottom, 3) 3-mil or heavier full wetsuit, or 4) 3-mil or heavier Farmer Jane/John with either a drytop or a neoprene jacket. I would also recommend you bring a Paddle/Splash jacket to either wear or carry with your boat not to mention wearing approprpiate cold water boots, hats, and gloves. Don't forget to also being a full change of fleece clothing in a drybag to either carry with you or (if someone is willing to carry for you) on another boat (this is mostly for SUP paddlers if we end up allowing those). I will send out the official Cold Water Guidelines to those signing up to verify you can meet them (mostly its stuff like PFD, whistle, pump, paddle float, sponge, water, snack, etc). I will bring everything designated as "must have's" for the leader. If you are able to also carry some of the leader stuff (like a tow line or strobe light), let me know. As always I will have a VHF/Weather radio (that also does FRS/GMRS) as well as 2 FRS/GMRS radios (in case no one else brings a VHF radio): all are waterproof and submersible.

I know it is a long way for some of you to come so the time is negotiable but for now we are saying meet at 10:30am to launch by 11am. At Truxton, you will pull down to the water, unload, and then move you car to the top of the hill. No fees last I checked. If enough folks are interested, we might find a place to eat afterwards.

I may join or may do a more ambitious paddle if others would like to join me.

If a group of folks would like to do a more ambitious paddle from that same location at the same time, that would be fine as long as someone is willing to take charge of that subgroup. Karen and I at this time are still planning on sticking to the more leisurely paddle but will post if we change our minds but have no problem splitting into 2 groups as long as someone can take charge of the second group.

FYI, while I will wait to decide whether to post on the SUP meetup for those that ONLY paddle SUP, anyone that does both SUP and kayak is welcome to bring both and we can make the call there. Of course, I will expect folks to abide graciously with whatever call I make. In truth, this is what I will be doing for myself: bringing both no matter what and deciding there (but if my call is no SUPs, I do this for everyone's safety and expect folks to use only their kayaks).
