Sunset/MoonLight Paddle July 3 7:30 pm Daingerfield Island near Alex.

  • Daingerfield Island

1 Marina Drive (at Daingerfield Island), Alexandria, VA, Washington, DC (map)

    38.832420 -77.040215

  • Join me for a sunset paddle, launching just south of National Airport, to follow the shore south past Old Town Alexandria. If the mood strikes us, we may mingle near the bridge with the group launching at Belle Haven that evening. One of the features of this paddle is seeing the beauty of Wilson Bridge as it lights for the night, and listening to the wildlife as it prepares for the night.

The general plan is to hang in the water until 9 pm, when the golf course does a fireworks display, then return to Daingerfield.

I am unfamiliar with this launch, but understand there is limited parking. Arrive early, and plan to be on the water by 6:45 pm. This paddle is not appropriate for first timers. All participants must have a PFD, paddle float, bilge pump and -- a light on their deck. Bring water; I don't see anywhere to stop for a snack, so plan accordingly. There are no rentals at this location.

    See you there!

Hello Madeline! Yes - thanks for all the information you providing and trying to make this happen! Will meet up at another event.

Thanks Madeline for watching this closely and letting us know. It's disappointing, but not a good idea to be out in a thunderstorm.

Sorry, folks, latest radar indicates we wouldn't be able to get on the water until 9 pm or so. This event is canceled.

No launch fee. It's roughly 4 1/2 miles from the Belle Haven cove back to Daingerfield if we go the whole way....that might feel a bit like work going upstream against the tide on the way back after the fireworks....just saying.....

After consulting a couple different poeple who have access to radar more than a hundred miles out, it looks best to launch at 7:30 and make this TRULY a sunset paddle. Please arrive with a 7:45 launch in mind.

Please be prepared with a rain jacket (just in case) and of course a deck light, hand held flashlight or otherwise.

Hope to see you out there!

Praying to the kayak Gods NOW for good weather!

    July 3, 2013

  • Madeline

I'm watching the weather, and will send out an email at 4:00 with a go or no-go, as some are driving a good distance. The event will be canceled if it's driving rain at launch time. Sprinkles are okay, but ANY band of thunderstorms on the radar in that area are unacceptable.

Would love to join, if any one had an EXTRA kayak available for rent. I've kayaked before, but don't own one. Just hoping. Otherwise, have a great time!
