Patuxent River at the Rt. 4 Bridge

Let's paddle the Patuxent River from the Rt. 4 Bridge. We always go north so we thought we would go south this time. Tides will be relatively high so clearance should not be a problem.

We will launch by 1pm so I presume most folks will get there by 12:30. It is the cold weather paddling season so need to wear at least a 3/2 mil wetsuit. PFD is required as always. Recommend bring a dry set of non-cotton clothes in a dry bag just in case.

In case you can not see the map, go to the Rt. 4 and Rt. 408 intersection. Just north of that intersection is a gas station. Turn as if you are going into the gas station but then take the street to the left of the gas station to its end. So from the beltway, go Rt. 4 out of town. Take Rt. 408 exit and at the end of the exit (stop sign) take a left. Go over top Rt. 4 and at the next intersection where the gas station is, take a left and go to the end of the road.

Most of my SUP folks can not make it so I switched this to a kayak-only event.

Don't have an idea of distance/time/end point planned. Also don't have suit. I have a 14 ft kayak and nature along the way is my objective. Do most have faster 16 foot kayaks.

My wife and I did this trip about 45 years ago. I think the road was 2 lanes back then. We took our 2 place Klepper folding boat, parked on the side of the road, carried the bags through the woods, put the boat together, and paddled south for a while. I can’t remember how long we were on the water, but I remember that it was a great paddle! I’m sorry that I can’t take the trip this time.

    Hi Deke,
I am hoping to join this paddle< will know tomorrow. I don't know the area, so I am wondering if this is a better paddle for my short boat (12 ft), or if my long boat is better? Thanks.
