The full moon rises at 8:15 pm today. I propose we put in at Belle Haven, do some site seeing and then view the moon rise over the Potomac before pulling off the water between 8:30 and 9 pm. We will enjoy a 3 hour paddle around Belle Haven, Dyke's Marsh, and if paddlers are willing cross the river to National Harbor.
Please arrive at 5:30 and we will launch at 6 pm, or before if everyone is ready.
The water is warmer now. Personally I will probably still be wearing light wet suit layers. Consider a spray deck, there can be chop at this location, and its added benefit is it keeps the bugs off your lower body.
Bring bug spray, water and a snack. Alcohol is prohibited at this location, just an fyi. Bring and attach your deck light. We will assist each other when it is time to turn them on.
This event is appropriate for day touring boats, like Pungos and Tsunamis, and any longer craft. This location can sometimes be windy when nothing else stirs and it can have sudden swells and chop. With the tide coming in I can almost promise chop. So please check your abilities before you come.
You MUST wear your PFD (life vest) zipped on your body.
A deck light is required for this event.
$5 launch fee, pay at trailer.
Parking is tight, be prepared to drop your boat and park elsewhere.
Bathrooms on site, always dirty, eek.
High tide: ~9:10 pm
Low Tide: ~3:30 pm
Moon Rise: ~8:15 pm
Boat Rentals are available but must be returned by 8 pm, making them impractical for this event.
Please carry a sound making device such as a whistle, and actually WEAR you life vest. We ask that you carry a light making device if on the river near dusk, such as a deck light.
As always, each paddler's safety is his or her own responsibility. We assume no liability.
