Paddle the Anne Arundel County Water Trail

This is the third time that we're paddling from one of the new put-ins at Anne Arundel County that are now accessible thanks to the efforts of Lisa Arrasmith and others. On the first two, we launched from Beverly-Triton Beach Park and paddled to the Thomas Point Shoal Light and explored the South River and then West River and Rhode River. This time, we will launch from another new put-in, Shady Side Park, and paddle south on the Chesapeake Bay past Jack Creek Park and into Deep Creek at Franklin State Park which is still an undeveloped park. The trip will be at least 12 miles round trip at an average speed 3-3.5 mph, but we might also explore other creeks like Flag Pond Creek along the way. I am now calling this the AA County Water Trail Series since we are paddling parts of the draft trail that Ralph Heimlich put together.

We will get some help from the outgoing tide on our trip going south and a little help from the incoming tide on the return trip. Bring lunch and water. The current forecast shows mild conditions with waves <1 ft and wind less than 7 kt. The picture above was taken during our paddle across the mouth of West River near the put-in a week and a half ago. You must know how to do rescues and be wearing with a skirt (if your kayak is designed for it) and pfd and have a bilge pump to join this trip.

As an added attraction, the first Riverfest 2014, which is being held near the put-in at Discovery Village from 12:00-6:00 pm will we well underway on our return.

NOTE: Meetup time is 9:15 am. We will probably launch at 10 am. The launch which is located along the left field of the softball field is about 300 ft walk from the parking lot which is near the first base line. Bring wheels if you have them.

As always, please don't RSVP "No" unless you're changing from "Yes."

This is my EveryTrail GPS track. http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2825481

I turned it off upon arrival to the Riverfest waterfront, but roughly 12 miles for me, since I didn't paddle as far into Deep Cove. :)

This was another adventurous trip on the Chesapeake. While the air & water temps were 'perfect', we definitely paddled through SCA conditions at times against steady 16knt headwinds, dynamic chop and waves for several miles during the 13.5 mile trip. The trip featured a bit of everything from decent[masked]" chop, waves and surf in open water to wildlife along the sheltered coves at Franklin Point and the hidden creeks into Jack's Cove.

It's fair to say that many of us were spent, but all of us definitely felt invigorated with the challenge, especially by the mouth of the W. Rhodes River. Afterwards, our tired & aching muscles were soothed by the cool sounds of the Blues.

It was great to paddle with this very experienced group of sea kayakers, again! Thanks to Marc who led this next trip of his series and to Lisa Arrasmith who not only helped make this new water trail and Shady Side Access Ramp a reality, but who also greeted us at at the West Rhodes Riverfest to help us celebrate.

Yes, many thanks to Dennis for guiding us down this water trail! Was going to delete/edit, but I didn't mean 'Jack's Cove', but meant 'Deep Cove Creek'. While I didn't make it back in time for the 'Blessing of the Fleet' at Riverfest, I'm glad that we extended this trip to a full day's paddle. Fortunately, I still got enough photo-ops that I plan to share to the W. Rhodes Riverkeeper organizer at Riverfest. :)

What is the latest on the weather? I heard SCA for Saturday. Saw a poor lone sailboat struggling in the bay today as I went over the Bay Bridge. What is a PoSLer?

To be a member is the Society of PoSLers, you'll need to undergo a secret initiation ritual that requires kayaking through a gauntlet of paddlers.

Is anyone even surprised that there's a SCA? :) There were also SCA on our last two paddles in the area. Tomorrow looks similar to the condition when we paddled to the lighthouse. There maybe a little more NNW wind, but we're not going far from the shore. You can check it here: http://forecast.weath...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
