Dad's and Monuments (or a Monument to Dad :o)

Let's get out and paddle before everyone takes Dad out for a late lunch or dinner. We will meet at Columbia Island. We have the option of paddling Boundary Channel either way so we will use Boundary Channel for the upwind direction and go along the Potomac on the downwind side. If winds are calm we will go along Georgetown but if stronger, we will stick to the VA side.

The time specified is the launch time. Please arrive as early as you need to in order to launch by 9:30.

This is cross posted with the SUP group. It will not be a fast paddle but a more leisurely one. However, if we need to split into several groups, that would be fine as long as we have appropriate leaders for each group.

Columbia Island Marina is ONLY ACCESSABLE from the south bound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  If you miss it going south bound you end up having to do a convoluted series of U-turns to get back to it (have to take I-395 ramp towards DC and immediately get off again on the G.W. Parkway northbound, drive all the way to Spout Run, take Spout Run exit,  take the first left off of Spout Run which is a "U-turn" that puts you back on the G.W. Parkway southbound and now you have to drive a few miles to again get to the marina).  While southbound, look for signs to Lyndon Johnson memorial. It is the right immediately before the stone bridge, 1/4 mile before the I-395 intersection. The sign saying Columbia Island Marina is 25 feet before the exit so slow down when you see a humpback bridge ahead of you before the I-395 intersection.

Thank you Deke & Karen - perfect weather, wonderful people....so peaceful paddling the long way around TR island! The monuments are always breathtaking and we had the extra bonus of seeing the Dragon boat races! A truly awesome paddle!

Beautiful day paddling the monuments. I've never seen the water so calm. Thank you Deke and Karen, what a great way to spend a Sunday morning. And Happy Father's Day to all the dads.

This is my first outing with a meetup group, and it turns out I'll have to wrap up by noon. How long do you usually stay out for?

    June 14, 2014

    • Deke

The plan was to be back near noon.
