July 3rd Pre-Fourth Evening Paddle 6:30 pm Belle Haven

On Tuesday, July 3rd we'll pre-celebrate the holiday. We will meet at 6:30 pm and launch promptly at 6:45 pm. We will explore the marshes in the failing light, and as the sun loses it's fight with the horizon we overtake the Potomac across from National Harbor and watch the moon rise. This will be a Thunder Moon or Full Buck Moon, because bucks begin to grow new antlers at this time. This full Moon was also known as the Thunder Moon, because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month. (Tell us about it...)

High Tide is 9:00 pm, moonrise is 8:30 pm. This is an experienced paddle, as it is dark, and random swells appear unexpectedly and force one to compensate in their paddle stroke to stay atop. This is also the evening before a national holiday. Unless you have completed courses with Potomac Paddlesports or otherwise, in wet exits and reentry, this evening is not for you. There are no rentals at this time.

All boats MUST have the following: a PFD, a whistle and a light- not flashlights. Light: something like this: http://www.rei.com/product/722830/paddlers-supply-company-led-kayak-deck-light-with-suction-cup-base. PFDs on and buckled at all times.

Attendance is at the discretion of the organizer, due to safety factors.

We will go out afterward into Old Town for a bite.

Great as always. The fireworks at the country club with heat lightning behind them were spectacular!

This was a lovely, fast paced event. We took our time exploring Dike marsh, but moved at a good pace along the Potomac. It was an excellent balance.

What a show as we loaded our boats! Horizontal lightening behind spectacular fireworks in Alexandria. Nice breeze, very pleasant group of people

Tides, wind, temperatures, fireworks... all very well orchestrated... the power of the Werner magic paddle is just amazing... gotta get me one !! Nice paddle, thanks.

Wonderful paddle through the marsh. Good company. Just made it home when the skies opened. Good thing we were not on the water for that! Thanks for organzing Madeline.

Also, being full of crap violates IMO (International Maritime Organization) standards on kayak buoyancy and therefore can subject you to a condition known technically as "sinking." :)))

Hey, Dan-- I checked on USCG regs regarding using your "sparkling personality" for your boat light. Reg 51.c3 adopted 2011 states that RADIANT Personality may be substituted for no more than 10 lumens of light. The rest can be supplied by good jokes. Get ready!

Sounds good, Deke. Just add her as a +1 to your attendance, since she's experienced too!

Groovy. As I have lots of experience with that area (kayak there weekly), I am more than happy to lead folks back to the marina that do not want to cross over if that is OK with you.

That would be fine, Deke. We can go by the marina when we get out of the marsh for those who want to cut it short, then perhaps take a run across the river, depending on conditions and experience.

A number of us are paddling the next morning on a long paddle from Pohick to Mason Neck. Is it possible to make this a "2-parter" (those that will come and explore the marsh but then need to peel off to go home and rest up for the next morning while the rest cross the border into the Mordor...I mean Maryland)?
