Columbia Island to Roosevelt and back

Paddle from Columbia Island Marina under the Humpback Bridge out to the Potomac and then upriver past the monuments to Roosevelt Island returning via Boundary Channel. As this is a bit of a shorter paddle, we should be done by 4pm. This will be a moderate pace paddle that will most likely include some SUP paddlers (will be cross posted to my SUP group). We will try to launch as close to 1pm as possible to make sure we are back well before dark.

Should be a gorgeous day. I know it will be warm but remember the water is still really cold so wetsuits or drysuits please (NO COTTON unless you are a rabbit in which case cotton tails are permitted :o). As always folks are responsible for their own safety but dressing inadequately still puts not only the paddler in jeopardy but the entire group as well so please keep that in mind.

Please remember that Columbia Island can only be accessed from the non-water side of the G.W. Parkway so if coming from Alexandria or 395 it will be necessary to go well past the Marina to find a turn around point so keep that in mind when planning your route and the time it will take to get to the marina.

Deke did a great job of picking the best time and route to minimize headwinds and take advantage of tides. Great group and the Thanksgiving pie tailgate party at the end was delicious.

Deke, Thanks foe setting this up! Great group, terrific weather and splendid views... did you notice that about half the group couldn't remain seated?

Thanks Deke for organizing and leading the pack. The trip was a splendid way to digest Thanksgiving dinner and way more fun than Black Friday shopping at the mall.

I have the wet suit but still do not have the right kayak to go...thanks for the invite would love to have been able to go one more time before the season ends.

Actually your smaller kayak would work fine. We will probably split into 2 groups with Pete leading the faster group and me leading the slower group (I will be on a SUP). We have several fairly new Stand Up Paddlers that will not be able to keep up with the main group of kayakers so I have planned 2 routes that should allow both groups to end up in the same place at about the same time.

The Boundary Channel is only navigable at or close to high tide. Make sure to check your tides before heading that way. Have fun!

I did. That is why we start with the Potomac and come back Boundary Channel. I have paddled the channel dozens of times and as long as you are +- 3 hours from high tide you are fine (and right now the water levels are extra high so it is possible that can be even more). In truth I have paddled at low tide and it is simply a matter of walking your boat for a small section near the Rossevelt Island end.

Deke, I'll take my boat to work with me, hoping to cut out between 11:30 & 12. If I can't get away I'll change my RSVP in the morning. Hope to see you tomorrow!

coming from 66 to Geo Wash Pkwy is there a sign for the marina on GW Pkwy? also, once I turn right into the marina will I see where to go to meet you? Thanks, "The Directionally Challenged One"

There is a sign for the Marina right before the Humpback bridge and right before I-395 intersection. It is right across the memorial with the flying birds. Once you turn right go straight back and look to your left and look for the bright Yellow Subaru Baja.
