First Annual NOT-Opening Day !

  • This location is shown only to members

  • welllllll.... it looks like a consensus among organizers is to reschedule the "Official Opening Day" for later and warmer......but we will STILL go out  as planned, cold -gear required....

Behold the most anticipated day of the new year! It's time to unwrap the boats, find all of your gear and see if you still remember how to paddle! We will have two options on this day. The leisure cruise for those of us who need to work the kinks out, and a distance run for the more limber limber and aggressive members. The leisure bunch will paddle (piddle) around in Dundee creek while the hardcores will aim for a run up to Hammerman beach and back (10 mile round trip). Afterwards we can make a stop at Richardsons (or wherever the group decides)  for food. Bring water and a snack/sandwich for on the water.

All participants must wear PFDs and appropriate clothing for water temps. Questions? Email me.

Wunderground forecast : Small Craft Advisory in effect from Saturday morning through late Saturday night "Sat:NW winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts to 30 kt... becoming W 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt in the afternoon. Waves 3 ft.
Need opinions from those more experienced but this looks like a "NO-GO" to me.....

I had a sex change operation over the Christmas holidays, and realized that, as a woman, I was expected to bake cookies, change diapers, giggle at men's lame jokes, babysit, and, worst of all, attend wedding showers. So I am having the operation reversed this weekend. I'll see all of you next time! Jeffrina/Jeff

I'm going to hold off for the next outing and will take a rain check on the 15' ocean kayak. It will be God's perfect timing!

Folks the marine forecast for saturday looks a bit ominous to me : W winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts to 25 kt. Waves 1 to 2 ft. Air temp ~70. i have no desire myself to fight winds like this and prob wont go if this holds up. Others who are psyched certainly can. I will likely show up and eyeball it.

Haven't been out for awhile & was looking forward to Saturday. I don't have cold water gear either. So I'll be
Looking forward to "opening day" on another weekend, hopefully things will warm up soon. A "happy hour" sounds good - ???

Bill & I went out from Otter Point, which is not far from Dundee Creek 10 days ago. Beautiful paddle. Very comfortable in water shedding pants & windbreaker. Actually able to shed the breaker. This Saturday is supposed to be 10 degrees cooler. Something to keep in mind; today's winds were 17 mph, forecast is saying 14mph on Sat.

    April 23, 2014

Bob, The only reason I mentioned the wind is because the water will be rough & more splash back while paddling. If you are not comfortable in that kind kind of condition you may want to wait for the rescheduled "opening" day. As I am a leisure paddler & am not looking for an "adventure" when I am paddling I would not begin or continue a trip if I was not totally comfortable. As I realized it was early in the year & the water is VERY cold our trip was on calm water & a short one.

I have to say I am glad! I am traveling this weekend so hopefully it will be re-scheduled on a weekend I am home! Enjoy Saturday anyway!

930 members and 8 responses, so why do people not participate? Really members of Watersedge, so why join if you aren't going to participate?

have had multiple discussions with Chukc (CKA) last few days. there are no firm and fast rules on cold-water gear, but genrel consensus is that it should be rquired with water temps at 60 degrees and below- some owuld argue for 70 degrees and below. Bay temps at mid 50's now. we should have at a minimum hydrosilk type top, Farmer John/Jane type bottom.

Hey, I don't have cold water gear. This was going to be my next purchase for kayaking. But not something I can get right now. I may have to bail on Saturday. Perhaps we could schedule a second opening day when weather is warmer. It has been a ridiculously cold spring.

jane it looks like the general consensus on this among the organizers is to reschedule the actual "opening day" and some of us with cold gear will just go out anyway saturday. like i think i said below, $150 does it at REI, and if you have 20% off coupon......great to hear from ya !

Thanks, Greg, Sounds like a great offer! I am waiting to here from someone about a 2 PM visitation at Morningside Assisted Living facility in Hanover and the logistics of doing both. I have a heart for Seniors and their spiritual condition. Will let you know as soon as I figure it out,

I lived on a double kayak (see profile photo) and visited at home before traveling lots over the last 3 yrs. actually my kayak wasn't really MY kayak, but belonged to a man who lived on the Severn River near me and let me use it. let me use it. I presently have access to it, but don't have the proper vehicle to carry it elsewhere on. So . . . . Can only kayak where either someone has an extra kayak, rental available or another person who has a double kayak they would like to share, or pick up the one I have access to respond. Anyone have any input as to my dilemma?

we will be monitoring water temps but likely this trip will require cold water attire. if you DON'T know what that means, check out the following excellent link, from Chuck of Chesapeake Kayak Adventures : "Unfortunately I'm relatively certain that water temperatures will not be in a range where we can waive the Cold Water Attire Requirements this year so Cold Water Attire is required for this paddle. If you don't know what that means you can learn more here http://www.meetup.com/Chesapeake-Kayak-Adventures/messages/boards/thread/38728872 You will not be allowed to participate in this paddle without the appropriate cold water attire."

sorry Bob, i forgot you'd said you were out of town the 26th weekend. You'd asked me to get this going and i'm out of town the first weekend in May. Btw, I'd be in favor of having these kinds of discussions at our FB organizers site :)
