Wrangling HTML (2-class series)

This two class series gives you a solid foundation in website building. First, we get you set up with the (free) software you’ll need. Then we dig right into HTML, learning about tags and putting together pages. With that behind us, we talk about some of the finer points of HTML and cover the nuts and bolts of getting your work online. This course is the perfect precursor to our CSS Basics class and a prerequisite for almost every other class we teach.

Thursdays @ 7:00-9:00pm (Doors open at 6:30pm to get a good seat, grab a snack and get set up)

Class 1 - July 25th: Code editors + Hello World HTML

Class 2 - August 1st: Web semantics + Getting your work online

All the notes for the course will be available online for you to use during and after the class.

11th floor, Room Singapore

Cambridge Innovation Center

1 Broadway, Cambridge, MA

Cambridge, MA 02142

T Stop: Kendall / MIT

Street parking is available (though usually sparse) on Broadway St., Third St., and Main St.

Please bring photo ID. Upon entering 1 Broadway you'll check in with security. Tell them you're visiting the 11th floor.

Once you depart the elevator you'll find glass doors that are locked. If one of us is not there waiting to open the door, call [masked] and we'll come let you in.

We're meeting in the room labeled Singapore.

The total cost for the course (both classes) is $50.

You'll pay a $5 deposit when you RSVP via Meetup.com; because we have limited space, this is to save your spot in the class.

Then, the remaining $45 will be paid at the first class. We accept cash or PayPal; there is a $5 discount for cash payments.

+1 Young adult discount (girls 16 and under): half-pints are half-off if they're attending with you (shrinking the gap starts early, folks).

Well, although not as critical, I also left something in the room! My umbrella! I left it on the floor by one of the plants - it is a full length black and white umbrella. Would greatly appreciate getting it back because it is the first umbrella I've had that withstands the high winds around the Boston buildings! BUT admittedly, not as critical as Juliette's power cord!
Susan or Nicole, can you please let me know if you have the umbrella and we can figure out a way to get it back to me once I know one of you have it! Thanks!
Terrific class last night! You both are doing a terrific job!

Hi Nicole - Do you know how late someone is at concierge? I may be able to stop by today after work after 5 p.m. I would like to confirm that I can get to 14th floor concierge and that I can either just take my umbrella or if someone has to be in concierge area.

      Hi Cindy,
I'm not sure if they have official hours, but in our experience there's usually someone there until 5:30, sometimes 5:45. If the umbrella's in sight, I'd say you are fine taking it (it has your name on it). If it's not, I don't know where to look, sorry!

Did anyone see a Mac power cord left at the HTML meetup this evening (8/1) I think I left mine behind. Could someone let me know asap. I am kinda freaking out if I cannot power my computer tomorrow! Thanks. Juliette

Hi Nicole, I will not be able to attend this... My career direction is going down a different path. Thank ou and I hope to meet you in another venue soon!

Thanks for the heads up, Robyn. All the best!

Hi Nicole/Susan -- are we required to bring a laptop to class, or will we be meeting in a computer lab? Thanks!

    July 24, 2013

    • Nicole N.

      Hi Katy,

We're not meeting in a computer lab. Most students bring laptops, but you don't have to. Some folks come with notebooks to take notes and follow along with the person next to them for the hands-on parts. It's totally up to you.

OK Nicole and Susan...my surgery has been rescheduled so I'm back 'on' for tomorrow night! This will be a lot more fun than having surgery!!!

  • Cindy Jean R.

Hi Nicole, Thank you for understanding! Yes, this will not be fun but on the other hand, I will be glad when it is over!

    Hi Susan,
I've had an unanticipated need to have oral surgery this Thursday! The surgeon has told me that I will not be able to sit through a class after this surgery (and I have to take the following day off too!). Can I be released from the obligation to pay for the class due to my giving you a few days notice? Your understanding of this unexpected situation is appreciated! I am VERY much looking forward to attending your classes and to meeting you, all the instructors and attendees too!

      Hi Cindy,
Oh no! That sounds seriously un-fun. Yes of course you are released. Hope the surgery goes well and you have a speedy recovery! We'll catch you next time. =)

    I wish I could, but I have a conflict in the 25th.

Hi, everyone. I am a CPA with no software education, but one who recognizes the importance of a great website. Are these courses for someone like me?

    1 · July 6, 2013

    • Nicole N.

Yep, these courses are perfect for you, Ellen! We start at the very beginning and use lots of examples/exercises. Many of the other attendees don't have any software education either, so you will fit right in.

    Hi Nicole,

This is just a question and by no mean a criticism or anything like that. :) I have attended similar workshops and they generally charge much less than $50 or at no cost. Have you thought about lowering the cost so that these workshops are more accessible/affordable for people who are interested? Thanks!

    July 2, 2013

    • Susan B.

Fair question, Cai! We welcome the discussion. Not to completely overwhelm you with an answer, but we actually have a blog-post-in-draft on this very question. It's not published yet, but you can check it out here: http://bit.ly/14LzzyW : )

Hi Susan, very fair and reasonable explanation! I have yet signed up for a class yet (schedule conflict), but I would definitely take a course with WSW in the future. :)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
