Beginner weekend: Day 2 Lower Green

Sunday will be a continuation of day 1.  While we continue to work on our skills from Saturday, we will try to add a few more.   Things like surfing, and making more difficult eddies and ferries.  We plan on practicing some basic self, and assisted rescues.  We'll travel further downstream then we did on Saturday, giving us more places to to work on our skills.

Once again I'd like to apologize to anyone looking forward to the ledges.  When I picked that spot I never thought we would have such a large group.  It will be much easier to manage that many on the Lower Green.  There will still be ample opportunities to push your comfort level even if you have some experience.

Directions to the put in:

From Asheville, Take rt 26 east to exit 59.  Turn left onto Holbert Cove rd.  Go back under rt 26 and take the first left onto Green River Cove rd.  Be careful as the road has some very tight switchbacks.  At the end of the switchbacks, there will be a gravel parking lot on the left.  This is the put in, and where we will meet.

Michael and I are planning to be there. Depending on who shows up, we might run the upper green instead. But we will paddle something.

Well, I said we paddle rain or shine, and Mother Nature is showing her sense of humor! Unless the river gets to high (unlikely as it is dam controlled), or, thunder storms roll in, the trip will go on as scheduled. Right now the forecast is for 55ish, and showers/thunder storms. You will want to dress warmly. Drytop/drysuits are best, but thin wetsuits should work pretty well, as will a fleece/splash top combo. Gear can be rented at AAR. I will bring some extra tops and pants as well. I was swimming... er kayaking last weekend in similar conditions and it wasn't too bad. Feel free to contact me with any questions. [masked]

I can bring some extra stuff as well. I know I have an extra spray top and a short sleeve dry top. A farmer John wetsuit and possibly gloves. It's been quite a while so I can't completely recall my inventory but I'll bring what I have

Duke energy is posting that they are releasing 2 units all day Sunday. Normal release is 1 unit. Double the pleasure!

Recovering from a long and grueling sinus infection, so I'm going to wimp out about the cold air and water. I hope someone on the wait list will be able to take my place, and I'll see you all next time!

I was at one time a 4\5 boater and am more than capable on this river. Can also help with newbies if you'd like. Just want to get back on the water again.this would be a good place to start.

There will be more changes to this trip so please keep an eye on it. I am hoping to get everyone included, but it is not easy as there are so many.

Hi Lorelei, You're welcome to come out on Sunday. Please be aware that Ledges section of the French Broad is class II-II+ and not really suited to recreational kayaks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
