Upper Green class II-III+ Advanced Beginner/intermediate

The Upper Green is a fun class II/III+ creek set in a deep peaceful gorge.  While most of the river is easy class II,  the run is best known for it's three class III/III+ rapids - Bayless Boof, Wanda's Hole, and Pinball.  If you have never run the Upper and are not a jaded intermediate boater then these three will get your adrenaline going the first few times you see them.  The good news is that Bayless, Pinball, and Wanda's are basically pool drops that are not particularly difficult and they end in calm water in case things did not work out.  Even better, they can be portage or sneaked with a bit of effort.  We will stop and scout the two bigger drops if needed, so you can decide whether to run them or not.

Do be aware the UG is a step up from the Lower.  To have a good run you need to have some boat control and be past just paddling down stream.  If you can do basic peel outs, eddy turns, and ferries, you should be able to handle this.  This is a creek run so you will likely hit rocks if you flip or swim.  A roll is not mandatory but you should be trying them if you are going to run this type of river.

The hardest part is the hike out at the finish which is 6/10ths of a mile uphill carrying your boat and gear.  It is far from a pleasant stroll but most seem to feel the run is worth it.  If you have any doubts about the hike then I would encourage you to scout it out before committing to the run.

If you have not run this and have any questions as to whether or not you can, please contact me.  Since this run goes deep into the gorge, once we get started there is no hiking out until we get to the end.

MUST HAVE - White Water Gear (WW Boat, Skirt, PFD, Helmet, Paddle)

'In' as in whatever the hell we find to run? :) or do you have a preference? How do you feel about drive to Hartford (Lower half of Pigeon) vs Micaville (Toe) - or NOC?

Hey Greg, might try Nanty just cause never have before. Or Upper G again, though I'd like less water till my bashes from last Sat fade more! 200% & new creeker without hard edges was a bit challenging in fast high water. If anyone wants to explore S Toe I'd love to get a crew and go reaquaint myself though it's long drive, over near Morganton I think.

Hi Gunnar & Mike, I was really bummed not to join you yesterday but boat needs a more major rework for footbrace than hoped. I miss UG but right now have another concern: Was wondering if anyone would be interested in leading me on FB9 or Pigeon next weekend. Need help with feeling secure in big wave water! Smaller wave roll coming along but no success yet with big long rapids, and also can't seem to tell where holes will be without being able to see over steep rollers. Anyone feel like taking a decent boater out in the roller coaster stuff, spotting me if I miss rolls? (Thanks to anyone who'd be up for that!!)

Ok, back from Tuck & feeling pretty good but it's the AM stiffness that will say yay or nay. Also need to do some work on boat so my foot brace system stays in better. Anyway if I come I will RSVP here around 7:30, 8:30 at latest tomorrow morn. Hope I see you soon!

If there's anything left of my energy (enough to lug out gear, that is) I would love to join you! :) ~ Have Tuck trip tomorrow, see how that goes.
