Wilson Creek Gorge is a solid class III/IV roadside creek in Pisgah National Forest, near Morganton/Lenoir, NC (1.5 hour from Asheville). This is one of my favorite runs and is always a good place to learn and have a good time on the water.
The entire 2 mile run is more forgiving than many other creek runs, however it does require solid boating skills. To have a good day on Wilson, you should have solid boat control, confidence in ferrying, making eddy turns, be able to boof, and have a 90%+ combat roll. This run should not be your first foray to "creeking" and solid runs on Big Laurel and similar rivers are a prerequisite for attending. Many rapids are similar in nature to Frank Bell's and Kayaker's Ledge on FB9.
One of the best things about this run is that it's short enough to do laps (usually 2-3 laps), but you're welcome to bow out if 1 lap gives you your whitewater fix for the day.
We'll be meeting at the Gorge take-out, next to the Forest Service restroom, which is about 2 miles up Brown Mountain Beach Rd. From there, we'll scout the 3 largest rapids (10 Foot Falls, Boat Buster, and Thunder hole) and head to the put-in.
MUST HAVE: Creek boat or modern River Runner. Basic Whitewater Gear (Skirt, PFD, Helmet, Paddle, Throw rope, etc). Cold Weather Gear (Semi/Dry Top, Dry Pants, Dry Suit, non-cotton base layers, gloves, pogies, skull cap, etc).
If you sign up for this meetup and end up not being able to attend, it's no big deal. I just ask that you please change your RSVP so I'll know who's attending. Feel free to contact me with any questions or special concerns.
