Monthly Meetup: Survivor Gift Drive & Justice for the City Series Collaboration

Prostitution, human trafficking, and the sex trade are not just fodder for headlines in the paper - and they are a significant community issue for those of us in downtown Washington, DC.  This past October, the DC Police Department's operation 'off the streets - 2' resulted in more than 60 arrests in downtown Washington, all in 36 hour period, all of men and women consuming or being sold in the sex trade.  Through the first half of 2013, the National Human Trafficking Resource Center is tracking 30 cases of potential human trafficking in the District of Columbia.  All the while, our DC Human Trafficking Taskforce, coordinated by the Department of Justice, is trying to equip our justice system to identify people who are being trafficked and provide them with a path to safety.

Join DC SMS, Asbury United Methodist Church and other DC area churches and nonprofits as we come together to collaborate and identify ways we can take action to fight human trafficking in our community and host a holiday gift drive to benefit trafficking survivors.

We will watch a short documentary (3AM Girls) and host a discussion with Tina Frundt (Founder and Executive Director of Courtney's House) and leaders from Safe House of Hope, two nonprofit organizations that are leading the fight for a path to safety for victims trafficked here in Washington and in Baltimore.

The survivor holiday gift drive will benefit Courtney's House and Safe House of Hope. You can find each organization's wish list below. Please feel free to donate to Courtney's House via the Google Form or bring gifts for either organization with you the the event. DC SMS will arrange transportation for these items to Courtney's House and Safe House of Hope before the holidays.

Hi all! Asbury is closing today (along with much of DC) due to inclement weather. We will keep you all posted as we look to reschedule this event. Thank you for your patience and flexibility!
