I hope your week is going well!
As many of you know, I've served as lead organizer for DC Stop Modern Slavery for about a year now. Each year, our organization likes to open the opportunity for others to lead this incredible community of anti-human trafficking activists.
I am writing to officially open the nominations period for the DC SMS lead organizer position, share what this role entails, and to discuss next steps!
Here's how the process will work:
NOMINATION & ELECTION SCHEDULE
· June 12-19/Nominations: Nominate yourself or others for the lead organizing role.
· June 20-27/Confirmations: Current lead organizer confirms nominees. Nominees have option to select a running mate.
· June 28-July/Election: Online voting period.
· July 8/Celebration: Gather to celebrate and welcome our new leader! Details to come on our Meetup.com calendar!
· Beginning July 9/Transition: Current lead organizer works closely with those elected to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

EXPECTATIONS FOR ROLE
· Set group strategy & direction—In close collaboration with organizational leadership and membership as a whole, discern the best way forward. This typically takes the form of smaller decisions such as who to have come speak at meetups, whether or not to start a new team, whether and how to best partner with different organizations and initiatives. You must have the humility to seek an appropriate amount of insight from others while having the courage to make difficult decisions.
· Empower team leaders—Communicate regularly with team and subject area leaders (including walk, advocacy, membership, newsletter, faith, business). Set goals with them, hold them accountable, and find out how you can reduce obstacles so they can do their best work and, in turn, empower their teams and subteams.
· Build and leverage partnerships—DC SMS exists to complement and support the work of other organizations in the unique ways that only we as citizens can. Having relationships with other organizations in the field is crucial to keeping a pulse on these opportunities.
· Build the sense of community among the group, remembering that people’s extent of commitment to and involvement in this cause is accentuated by the extent to which they feel like they belong and have fun. You can accomplish this by knowing people on an individual basis, meeting them for coffee or the like and especially by connecting people with one another.
· Plan events—Although this responsibility is often shared with others (and could even become its own team) the lead organizer is currently the one ultimately responsible for ensuring that DC SMS gets together roughly once a month either for our own event or to attend another group’s event. Hosting DC SMS events involves securing space, speakers, creating handouts, opening the meeting, etc.
· Make new people feel welcome—You will frequently be the first point of contact for new people. Communicate the benefits of being involved and connect them with the membership team and the website.
Q: Who is eligible to run?
A: Everyone is eligible to run.
Q: Can you nominate yourself?
Q: I might be interested in running but I’d like to find out more first. How can I do this?
A: I (Ashley) am available by phone, email, and in person throughout this process to help people discern what makes the most sense for them and for the organization. Please email me at [address removed] with any questions or to set up a call.
Q: What if someone who is running already has a leadership role within DC SMS?
A: If someone is elected to this role who is currently serving in another leadership role within DC SMS, they will need to step down from that role. Anyone currently holding a leadership position who is not elected will retain their current position.
Q: Can more than one person fill this role?
A: Yes. Currently there is just one lead organizer with a very strong leadership team. That said, it could work well to have a lead and deputy organizer or some other similar combination. The most important things are that the people work well together and have clearly defined roles. During the confirmation process, nominees will have the opportunity to learn who else has been nominated and can form pairs if desired. This is not required, though.
Q: Is this a paid position?
A: No. All DC SMS positions are currently unpaid. You will be reimbursed for any expenses you incur (printing, space rental, etc.).
Q: How many hours a week does this position entail? When would I need to do things?
A: You will spend anywhere from 2-20 hours/week on this, though 20 is pretty rare (longer weeks tend to come as we near the Stop Modern Slavery walk). In the beginning it will take more time since you are getting the hang of things.
Q: What types of tasks do you spend most of your time doing?
A: In descending order: emailing, calling, in-person meetings, event planning.
Q: Is it worth it?
A: Absolutely. But this answer will depend on your goals, aspirations, and skill set. Let me help you determine if this role is the best fit.
