U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S OFFICE OF SAFE AND DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS TO HOST 2009 NATIONAL CONFERENCE
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will give opening remarks at the Department's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools' 2009 national conference at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. The theme of the three-day conference, which runs Aug. 3-5, is "The Power of Change: Healthy Students, Safe Schools and Engaged Communities."
Workshops and plenary sessions include: Developing Emergency Management Plans for Schools and School Districts; Sexting; Preventing and Decreasing Bullying on the School Bus; Keeping Schools Safe for Food-Allergic Students. Emerging Issues: Missing and Exploited Children, Human Trafficking, Discrimination in Schools and Security and Integration Challenges of Recent Immigrant Communities; Columbine 10 Years Later: What Have We Learned; and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and Creating New Opportunities for Collaboration.
The conference will feature more than 2,000 participants, ranging from education leaders, mental health representatives and parents to experts in the field of substance abuse, violence prevention and emergency preparedness.
