GET OUT THERE

NEW - The first-ever World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is a week away! The United Nations has made July 30 the official observance day to spread awareness about the growing movement to end modern slavery. You can show your solidarity with survivors worldwide by taking a photo of yourself, a friend or both making a heart with your hands, then posting it on social media using the hashtag #igivehope. Or come up with your own way to get involved, and share that with your friends, too! Fore more info click here.

NEW - The riveting documentary Not My Life has teamed up with Breaking The Links on a US-based youth awareness campaign that will be touring the US in the coming weeks. Two back-to-back screenings will be coming to the DC area: Aug. 5 at the First Congregational UCC starting at 7 pm, and Aug. 6 at Friends Meeting of Washington, DC, 2111 Florida Ave. NW. Admission is free for both, and both will be followed by discussions. Click the links for more info!

GET INFORMED

NEW - Oftentimes in the highly complex, overwhelmingly large issue of human trafficking, it is easy to forget the importance of bystander intervention. Official anti-trafficking trainings are important, especially for those on the ground daily, but every one of us can play a role in aiding not only trafficking survivors but women who experience sexual harassment daily. It all begins with the simple question: You Ok, Sis? Watch this short, compelling video to learn more!

REMINDER - Sign on to support the Business Transparency legislation introduced last month by Congresswoman Maloney. The bipartisan Business Supply Chain Transparency on Trafficking and Slavery Act of 2014 (H.R. 4842) would require certain companies like Walmart and Costco to report about efforts to address slavery, child labor, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children within their business operations. The Alliance to End Slavery is gathering signatures to endorse this Act and get Congress to take action. Add your or your organization's signature to this petition requesting action on H.R. 4842. To endorse, please click here or e-mail Meredith Owen at [address removed].

REMINDER - Are you a fan of spoken word? Of survivors speaking out against human trafficking? Then this video is a must-watch! A sex trafficking survivor reads her poem in sequence with some powerful images that remind us all how much we still need to do to make this horrible injustice a thing of a the past. Share it on your social media channels to expand the movement to end modern slavery!

The purpose of the WalkFest (formerly known as 'UNBOUND') is to unify the anti-slavery movement by providing a platform for organizations to raise awareness and funds, engage with community members, collaborate, and explore new innovations. The 2013 walk event was a huge success, raising over $50,000 and involving more than 1,000 participants. We currently have volunteer positions available in Communications, Development, Logistics, and Outreach. To learn more, go here or send an email to [address removed].
