Speaking of the PickAxe Book ...

I mentioned yesterday at the meetup that the PickAxe book was
something of a bible for learning Ruby. If you're interested, the
Pragmatic Bookshelf is running a really good deal:

As of this writing, it was $10 for the paper book (+ ~$4-6 for
shipping) and/or $10 for the e-book.

(I have no interest in the Pragmatic Bookshelf, but this is very good
deal, especially for students and others on a budget!). Ruby is, and
likely will continue to be, something of a force in the web
development arena.
