The 2008 election might feel like a distant memory, but we're going to spend the July WCM meeting discussing the Democratic National Convention website and the CMS that powered it. From the official press release from the Democratic National Committee: "DemConvention. com received more than 3.2 million visits totaling more than 2.6 billion hits during Convention week. More than 350,000 hours of video were watched by DemConvention.com visitors as the DNC site offered live gavel-to-gavel coverage in High-Definition (HD) in both English and Spanish for the first time in Convention history." During this session we'll discuss -Open source procurement -President Obama's success in Web 2.0 interaction -Object oriented code -Usability in a CMS -Managing massive spikes of traffic The CMS that powered this site is SilverStripe. If you're not familiar with it, it's a commercially-support ed open source CMS and framework downloaded more than 150,000 times. Web Content Mavens is lucky to have SilverStripe's Founder (Sigurd Magnusson) all the way from New Zealand to discuss the project and what his CMS can do! Tim Chambers of Dewey Digital will also be on hand to discuss his role in the project. As always, Web Content Mavens is sponsored by NavigationArts, Microsoft, and Percussion.

If you combine the knowledge of the 1,000+ members in our group, you'd find that we know a lot about CMS. This month, we're going to find out just how much we know! We're going to pool our knowledge about specific CMS tools and facilitate small group discussions about the systems we love (and the systems we love to hate). After our typical networking, we'll break up into groups based on interest in specific content management systems. We want participants who are developers, content contributors, editors, strategists, designers, usability specialists, information architects, etc. Please bring your questions, concerns, tips and tricks about the tool of your choice. 7:00 Networking 7:30 Break into Small Discussion Groups by CMS 8:30 More Networking This event will be a great opportunity to learn from each other - and identify points of contact within the Web Content Mavens community who are knowledgeable about a specific tool. If this is successful, hopefully it will be a jumping off point for creating CMS specific user-groups within the Web Content Mavens umbrella. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEADING ONE OF THESE SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS, please let me know. At the very least, we will have sessions around: Open Source Percussion CM SharePoint Sitecore Stellent Vignette As always, our sponsors will provide funding for food, drink, and room rental. Thanks in advance to NavigationArts, Percussion, and Microsoft.

ALL STAR PANEL: Strategies for Adopting & Deploying New Technologies ANNOUNCING THE WEB CONTENT MAVENS' APRIL MEETUP: An all-star panel of professors from Georgetown University discussing "the people part of IT" -- strategies for adopting and deploying new technologies. Our speakers have worked on Internet and IT projects at IBM, Apple, the White House, the US Senate, and the FCC, to name a few, so they have a wealth of professional experience to draw from. Georgetown University is not known as a tech school, but hidden among the spires overlooking the Potomac River are professors and researchers studying how individuals and organizations adopt new technologies. Their work, which spans disciplines as diverse as sociology, political science, economics, technology policy, psychology, and management, could help companies and governments craft more effective strategies to spur the growth of new IT applications. Wednesday, April 15th NOTE THE LOCATION CHANGE - Georgetown's Public Policy Institute is the Location Sponsor for this event. We will be meeting on campus, at the historic "Car Barn" building, 3520 Prospect St. NW, Washington DC. 7:00 pm Check in and networking 7:30 pm Presentation 8:30 pm More Networking Michael Nelson joined the Georgetown faculty at the end of 2007 after spending nine years as Director of Internet Technology and Strategy at IBM, where he managed a team working on IBM's Next Generation Internet strategy. Prior to that, he spent ten years working on Internet policy in the US Senate, the White House, and the Federal Communication Commission. His research focuses on the future of the Internet, cyber-policy, innovation, and e-government. His talk will focus on how organizations and governments can foster the development of cloud computing. Daryl Nardick is Senior Project Consultant for Georgetown University's Center for New Designs in Learning & Scholarship (CNDLS), a pioneering center developing new techniques for applying Web technologies in the classroom. Her interest is in the intersection of personal transformation and digital media developed during her years with Apple Computer when she headed up the company's higher education market development effort. She’ll discuss the role digital media can play in teaching to and from the whole person in higher education institutions. David Ribes recently joined the Georgetown faculty after finishing his Ph.D. at UCSD and doing post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan School of Information. His research interests include the organization of large-scale infrastructure development, the practice of science policy, and how IT is changing the nature of scientific research. He’ll discuss how lessons learned from scientific cyberinfrastructure projects, such as the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network, can be applied to IT projects in industry, government, and academia in order to ensure their long-term sustainability. Speakers: Daryl Nardick, Ph.D., Senior Project Consultant & Director of Strategic Project Integration, Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS), Georgetown University. Michael R. 7:00 PM Check in and networking 7:30 PM Presentation begins 8:30 PM Q+A and more networking In today's world, people are more and more pressed for time. The explosion of the web and web services and sites creates opportunities and demands on an individual's time. How much free time do they have? Can they carve out time to participate actively in new communities or should organizations adopt a distribution strategy where they are meeting users in the space and communities that they are already in? Kevin Novak will provide background on several initiatives where users aren't coming to communities despite large investments in infrastructure and marketing. He will also discuss and highlight several distribution strategies that can lead to success in expanding existing communities while serving and meeting an organization's objectives. Kevin Novak is the Vice President for Integrated Web Strategy and Technology for the American Institute of Architects. This event is being sponsored by NavigationArts , Percussion, Foresee Results, and Microsoft. To check out Microsoft developer events online or in person, click here.
