What is IRC

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and goes back to before the World Wide Web. Although with new technologies IRC has evovled, it still is a fully text based communication system where groups of people can gather. IRC is made up of thousands of seperate networks each having many channels or rooms.

Do I need any special software?

You will need an IRC client. There are hundreds of these available on the web. Many instant message clients and browsers either come with this functionality or has an addon for it. However, I would not recommend using these types of IRC clients because you will not be able to fully take advantage of what IRC offers. Below are a few of my recommendations for an IRC client.

  • KVIrc - A well developed Open Source client.
  • Bersirc - A simple, no frills, Open Source client.
  • HydraIRC - A good mulit-network Open Source client but may be a little overwhelming for a new IRC user.
  • mIRC - The most popular Windows client. SHAREWARE

  • Xchat - Common Open Source client.
  • Irssi - A straight text based highly scriptable client.

Sorry Mac users I can not personally atest to any Mac IRC clients as I have not used any.

Here is a larger list of clients: http://en.wikipedia.o...

And here is a small feature comparison of some clients: http://en.wikipedia.o...

I have a client. How do I get to the JaxWeb channel?

Our channel is on the Freenode network. Here is the server address and channel:

Channel: #JaxWeb

In most clients you type

Then type this to join the channel:
/join #JaxWeb

There you go! Chat away!

If you these commands do not work for you or you need any help at all in getting to our IRC channel please feel free to post a message on our Message Board or email the organizer and we will be more than glad to help.
