Migrating or Converting Joomla! Templates from 1.5 to 1.7/2.5

Do you have a 1.5 Joomla! template that needs to migrate to 1.7 or even 2.5?

Most published migration documentation recommends us to download the upgraded template from your template provider. But what if your template provider does not support that particular template any longer? Or, what if you have a custom template that did not come from a template provider?

This meetup will show you how easy it is to convert your Joomla 1.5 templates to 1.7/2.5 and show you a few online resources where you can find some information to assist you.

Hello, my name is Kirk Hayes and I have been a Joomla advocate since the 1.0 days long before 1.5 ever existed. Back then I got stuck dealing with Joomla 1.0 websites that did not have support for Joomla 1.5 templates even from reputable template providers. With this new long term release, I want to make sure that we Joomla folks will not be frightened of the migration and be as well equipped as possible. I don't have all the answers, however I will show you a real conversion step by step that does not require downloading an updated template. We will do the entire template conversion ourselves.

I am going to take one of my current 1.5 websites, convert the template such that it can be installed on a 1.7 installation. Then I am going to show you how I then use tools like Firebug and Chrome to make additional changes to the Template CSS in order to make it look like the old 1.5 website.

Requirements: Joomla 1.5 and enthusiasm

Jenn thanks for posting the slides and files. I didn't realize I could convert Joomla 1.5 templates to 2.5 myself, so I was doing without a template that a client wanted. Kirk's presentation gave me hope, and I'll see if the posted slides and files will let me do it! Thanks again Kirk.

Very good and practical show and tell of how to convert templates. I didn;t know until afterwards that you can't do this with Yoothemes. They construct their templates in a different way and have already published their themes for 2.5 even though it isn't really clear on their web site that it is available. I would have liked this kind of overview up front instead of diving right into the code.

Very useful talk - Kirk walked us through an actual migration, showing the main issues and how he resolved them. He provided links to useful information. Good audience participation. I always learn something from other participants as well as the speaker!
