"The Lab"

The Lab” meetup is an additional meeting for the Web Design & Developers group.

This month's topic will be "Learn how to do CSS structures correctly with only 10 CSS properties" presented by Brad Westfall.

We will also be using Google Hangouts for this event - on site for the slides and off site for anyone that can't make it in time. If you want to join please add me to your circle if you have not already. My user name is dilsah.tercanli.

    Also on a technical note. I did forget to explain one very important thing last night - the CSS reset. Im not a fan of traditional CSS resets (I used to be but not anymore). But I used a very simple reset last night that looked like this

    * {
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    }

    For more information on what this is, refer to this guys article: http://www.sitepoint.com/css-resets-useful-or-useless/

    And here's some info on those collapsing margins

      OK. Thanks Brad! And thanks for the Sitepoint links. I read some of the issues from last night, but don't have a better suggestion. I think a screen sharing site with only audio or all stay home are both good suggestions.

      Sure. I think it sounds good.

    Part of the reason I decided to try Google+ handouts was because it was our Lab topic last month. As I see it, using the system was part of what these meeting are about - trying new technologies and seeing what they are all about. Our group should be on the edge of technology and sometimes that means systems don't work, but I would rather have it this way rather than utilize only systems that are tried and true. Experimenting is part of what this particular Meetup is about.

    This may be a total newbie question but why not use GoTo Meeting? You have live screen and single or two way voice, with the ability to moderate questions, etc. Seems like we are trying to reinvent the wheel here.

    For Marcy and Bob and anyone else. If you missed last night, we dont have slides because it was a hands on thing. We might try to do it again. But for now I do have this

    This is an intro to floats I made a while back. Its very similar to what I talked about last night. Its also a prerequisite for the next link
    http://www.phoenixjavascript.org/downloads/html%20and%20css%20for%20beginners.zip

    This is basically what I made last night. This might be helpful to some, but without the verbal explanation and step-by-step instruction, it might be confusing

    I apologize to those that tried to attend through the hangout. We had technical difficulties. I'll try to get it fixed next time.

      The hangout was great. Brad's presentation was very informative. Don't worry about the technical difficulties, Dilsah, we'll get it figured out.

    Thanks to all that came out last night. We had some technical difficulties with broadcasting the meeting live to everyone - largely due to Starbuck's bandwidth and my computer not being ready for a Google hangout. For future reference, someone shared with me that JSBin.com has the ability for me to do an HTML and CSS demo on my computer and allows you to go to a URL to see the live updates of what im typing. Maybe we can do one of those things in the future (It would be a huge bandwidth saver). We would just need a way to transmit audio to remote people - maybe google has that

    Brad was amazing as usual. We all learned something. A lot of really good stuff. Brad showed us all how "Less is More" as in most things in life. Thank you Brad!

    The map is showing Barcelona, Spain again... wish they would either remove the link or fix it.

      Google maps is really crazy on this one. Is this place about a mile or so East of the 101, or right at 101?

      The Starbucks link that Dilsah posted is correct. Although their website has stalled my browser twice today. So if you dont want to visit their site, use this address for google maps https://maps.google.co...
