Why UX Matters for Startups (presentation by Dan Maccarone)

Monday, November 5, Dan Maccarone will speak about user experience and startups. Living lean and staying agile means startups have to prioritize their investments. When should they focus on the user experience? And how much focus should they give the user experience?

Dan is the co-founder of Charming Robot, a product design company based in NYC. For the past twelve years, he has been helping startups and media companies shape their online product strategy, including Foursquare, Rent The Runway, Jetsetter, and Savored.

His experience also includes television, music and print media, and he has worked with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Gawker, Saturday Night Live, Universal Music, and The Wall Street Journal. One of his most noted projects was creating the original strategy and user experience for Hulu. Prior to Charming Robot, Dan co-founded the design agency Hard Candy Shell.

In his presentation, Dan will focus on how and why startups should focus on the overall experience people will have using the product. From conceptualization to implementation, defining details of how interactions work, creating a distinct voice and tone, and what features need to be there from day one all feed into how users will eventually feel about a product.

We will explore how a brand comes into reality as the experience design evolves, especially focusing on how all decisions in the product development timeline are tied to the original product strategy. We will look at real-world examples that showcase successes and failures of digital product branding and Dan will share insights on his own experiences and where mistakes are generally made.
