Greetings new and old members:
Thanks as always for supporting our humble Meetup group. I look forward to seeing and speaking with all of you this coming Tuesday. I'm really exicted to host these terrific guys who build things that make life oh so interesting...
Old and free stuff can be sexy too! An overview of various efforts to geotag publicly available historical photos, organize and map them in a useful fashion, build community around history, and keep these resources free and accessible to machines and humans. Includes a demonstration of web and mobile applications bringing history to life on the map. We’ll consider non-commercial models to promote mapping within the fields of historical and cultural preservation.
Jon Voss is founder of LookBackMaps, an innovative public history project that is one of many new mashups in the field of historical and cultural heritage websites. He also runs jumpSLIDE networks, a small IT consultancy in San Francisco. Voss has been managing IT projects for non-profits and small to medium businesses in the Bay Area for the last ten years. His work on mapping historical photos stems from a love of history and a chance run-in with a band of privy diggers who excavated the hole of an 1870’s outhouse in his back yard in SF’s Mission district.
An interface for Twitter that has two different versions, for the iPhone and for regular Web browsers. It is an interface built to fix many of the annoyances people had with the twitter.com site, such as auto-refreshing, threaded conversations, convenient reply/retweet buttons, URL shortener and analytics, photo uploader and lots more. It is a very popular interface around the world (although recently censored in China, boohoo). Many of the features that were pioneered in iTweet were later adopted by Twitter itself.
Colby Palmer is a Web developer and UI designer, and creator of the Web-based Twitter client iTweet.net. He is currently building a social webconferencing and collaboration suite, as well as a realtime social chat platform integrating with Twitter and other social networks.
Also, some interesting Google news and information about a Geo Hackathon sponsored by WebMapSocial and Google happening on December 15.
