Weed Walk/Talk on Useful Common Wild Growing Plants in Nashville

Hey all! I am finally able to break free from my multiple roles of house fire victim and owner/contractor and volunteer worker organizer ... for long enough to put on my plant teacher hat for a couple of hours on Sunday. There are SOOO many new members who have joined since spring!

So Sunday will be a mix of how to study the plants, looking at the plants and talking about eating them and using them for healing.

I am putting together a fund raising video for an Internet fund raising campaign to rebuild the house and make it be terrific for having classes in year round. I need some footage of my teaching a group, or a group walking around or something to demonstrate the group classes I have. Maybe you can help?

Also, a donation off $10 MINUMUM is requested. Any amount above that will be VERY helpful. This project doesn't have a budget... because don't know what labor or materials will be donated. But of course, there are significant materials costs and fees for inspections and the licensed professionals that Metro Codes requires us to use.

You are welcome to arrive early, starting at 4 pm and stay as late as 6:30. I will be on hand. I want to start the class promptly at 4:30 so we have a solid 90 minutes. Consider bringing a means of recording info (camera, notebook, or just your ears and eyes)

Bring or wear bug spray ... the chiggers (and some 'squitters) just love the exotic new flesh that shows up on the land.. they get bored with the flavors of just me, hubby Martin, and kitty Tiger.

The driveway has been somewhat repaired and there is a portable potty convenient.

Some folks have had difficulty with GPS or Internet directions the zip is 37218

Be sure your directions mention Kings Lane.  My section of Drakes Branch Road is a DEAD end road the nearest semi main road is Kings Lane.

That is all about the plant class.

The rest is about the fire and our current living conditions, plans, etc ... so I don't wear myself explaining it to folks when you come on Sunday and see our poor truncated house and hole in the ground.

The fires (yes, plural) occurred overnight April 16, 17 this spring. The fire relit itself about 3 am after the fire department put the first on out (arrived 11 pm) and the electric company pulled the meter so that NO electricity is in the house.

Cause: seems to have been an animal electrocuting itself behind the wires and rotting and oozing body fat over live wires. Evidence? Rotten animal smell, then rotten animal smell accompanied by charring smell for days.

Fire Insurance? No. Mortgage paid off during 1980's. Search for fire insurance during the early '90's was unsuccessful, due to heating with wood and the part of the house that burned wasn't built according to modern codes, being built in 1940's out of materials from another house on the property... and then added onto and remodeled by a drunk during the 1970's. (I purchased in 1980 the small original house with the 23 acres for $35,000 which was a nice low price back then. It could have been $52,000)

The part left standing was added in 1985. Post fire scrutiny revealed shoddy work was performed and the walls were bulging out. That structure has a good foundation. It was a garage and great room and utility room. Now it will be two bedrooms, an office, and laundry area. The old original house was so destroyed by time, termites, mold, moisture, and finally the fire, that it has all been demolished. A smaller main floor structure topped a living roof (using dirt and plants on a mostly flat roof for insulation and summer cooling) is the plan. The kitchen will have a stove island that will be conducive to COOKING CLASSES in an open floor plan. There will be a sizable basement .. good for movies or slide shows.

The roof deck on the standing structure is not terrific. It will be replaced by a "Pop up" studio space with windows that face South to let in Winter sun.

Most people build their homes for just themselves.  Mine will be built to accommodate classes, creative events, etc as I have been having for nearly 20 years.

So lots of fund raisers are in store ... and lots of TRUST in God and Community.

We have had Lots of help! There has been so much to learn about myself, about basics of survival, about demolition and construction. I have been enjoying living a more camping lifestyle. There is a small trailer we are living out of with it's tooooo tiny kitchen.. we both cook from scratch and our diets are different ... meat eater/vegan couple.

Happy weekend to you regardless of your plans on Sunday/
