Werewolf Game Night... New and Improved

*** If full, join the wait list.  People always drop out closer to the event ****

The epic struggle between villagers and werewolves continues… read on to see what is new for this meetup:

Moderators (and potential moderators):
• If you want to moderate, please contact me at [masked]. We are going to organize the event differently and use your pre-designed villages.

• If you have never moderated before, you should try it some time. It will help you be a stronger player and will help the people who always moderate to be able to play more.

New Folks:

• Newbies and guests always welcome. No experience necessary. We will teach you how to play.

• RSVP to secure your spot and to get update emails.

• For your group discussion pleasure we have 3 rooms, each with a village of only 15 people.  We will have many games throughout the night with new villages starting whenever 15 new people show up or become available as players die off to minimize wait times.

• Show up anytime between 7pm and 3am.  But show up early to put in a food order by 7:30, and before 10pm to avoid waiting for someone to answer the buzzer.

• Pantheon Systems is on 3rd floor at 717 California St.

• St. Mary's garage at 433 Kearny is close, not too expensive, and open 24-hrs.  Montgomery is the closest Muni/BART station.

Rules for Keeping it Fun:
• No insults, condescending remarks, or calling a players choices “stupid”. Find other ways to persuade.

• No telling people how they should have played better at the end of the game unless they are okay with that.

• Be aware if you are regularly interrupting people or dominating the conversation. Make sure everyone has equal time to speak and be heard if they want it, and no one gets ignored. (remind me of this one if I'm playing).

• It’s good to be silly, but try not to be obnoxious or make the game stall.

• Kitchen is designated area for talking when you are not playing.  Even a few people talking quietly near a game in progress can be distracting.

Drinks and snacks:
• Bringing snacks and drinks (including alcohol) to share is optional.

• Help to clean up some of the mess before you leave.

Dinner (optional):
If you want to order dinner, use the sign-up sheet at the event by 7:30pm and pay $13. This includes your tax and tip, a sandwich and side of Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Onion Rings, or House Salad from Sutter Pub.  To keep it simple, you have 6 options, no custom orders:

1. Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich (Sliced roast beef, green bell peppers, onions and provolone cheese on a French roll.)

2. BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich (Shredded smoked pork marinated with BBQ sauce on a French roll.)

3. Reuben Sandwich (Sliced corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand island sauce on rye.)

4. California Chicken Sandwich* ($15 for this one: Grilled chicken breast topped with avocado slices, bacon, melted provolone cheese, lettuce and mayo on a bun.)

5. Sutter Pub Club (Bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, ham, turkey, Swiss cheese and mayonnaise on sourdough.)

6. Grilled Veggie Sandwich (Grilled eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, roasted pepper and pesto aioli on a French roll)

Order is called in at 7:30pm so try to arrive early if you want to eat ;)

Hi All, thanks for the feedback. Trying to minimize wait times between villages is the goal and with this many people and only 3 rooms we need to experiment, so we will keep trying new things to figure out what works best. I think the issue might be the fixed size, but I think not going over 15 is good since it becomes hard to talk. A possibly bigger factor was villages with no required kills, since kills are needed to feed dead players into the village waiting to start (and no kill villages also can take a really long time to end). So next time we will try requiring kills every night in all villages and hopefully get more consistent staggered start times. Anyway, glad everyone came and looked like everyone had a blast. I know I did ;)

Ah yes, the time limits were off. A day should be no more than 10 min including defenses. That was my mistake. I was trying to prevent games from going too long, but I've never used a timer before so my estimates were off and it made games go longer instead. I surprised myself when I saw how long 15 minutes actually lasted in the first round ;)

Yeah, I think forcing folks to work under the pressure of a tight deadline amps up the intensity, too, and makes it more fun, as counter-intuitive as that seems. The last game might have been a bit extreme, however.

I think the cap was too low. There were some really long wait times between villages, but overall more organized.I enjoyed having pre made villages. Still the best meet up I'm a part of thanks!

I think it might make things flow better if the game size restriction was relaxed. If every second or third game was designed to be flexible, taking 10 to 15 players, say, instead of strictly 15? Anyone here a master of queuing theory?

Instead of "second or third" game, just have towns ready for 10 players, perhaps, that you can whip out when you have 10 people and you're just waiting for more.

For people on the waiting list: We usually have about 5 to 8 people drop out on the day of, so you will probably get in. But if you want to guarantee you can also try removing your guests, and add them back in when space opens. Ideally, just have your guests RSVP on meetup ;)

Indeed I am! But now it won't let me add people. I think I'll just bring 'em and hope for the best.

    60 is keeping it minimal?

The werewolves can only eat so much.

I'd like to moderate. I'll send you my villages tomorrow.

Moderating is fairly informal. You should be able to just show up and moderate, without many people arguing against it.

We're trying something new based on feedback from the group, so this time moderators are contacting me beforehand to do a little preparation.

What's the new and improved part? Or are we talking about using the new set?

    February 11, 2014

    • Aaron N.

just implementing the feedback we got from people on how to make things even more fun. will be working with moderators on things like pre-designed villages and trying to reduce wait times, having dinner planned out, some rules for keeping it fun that are easy to forget during moments of passion ;) things like that.
