Gauging interest in a Bear Mountain Hike. Bear Mountain is about 30 minutes away up the Hudson River. We would start the hike at 9am. You will need to bring water, lunch, snack and wear comfortable clothing and shoes for hiking. Please do not attempt to hike without these basic items.

The length of the hike would be up for discussion.

Guys, I'm running 5-10 minutes behind. Wait for me, okay? I have snacks.

    November 9, 2013

    • Rob

Hi, Scott. I got there at about 10:15. I saw Kym's post about the parking, and posted where I was. I'll just have to see you guys next time.

      November 10, 2013

  • Rob

    I'm lost. Where is everybody?

    November 9, 2013

    • Scott

Rob, so sorry we weren't able to find you there. Unfortunately, none of us had reception in the parking lot. We waited in the parking lot until a little after 11 - what time did you arrive?

      1 · November 9, 2013

  • Kym L.

Hey there! When you pull in past the booth there's full empty parking to the left. I'll be there!!

    November 9, 2013

    • Rob

Kym, what kind of car do have?

      November 9, 2013

  • Julie

Thanks for responding Scott. I'm now clear that we are meeting at Bear Mtn at 10:30 but is there a designated area where we will meet there? I haven't been there in years and I really don't remember what it's like, so please excuse me if this is a silly question:-)

We are meeting at the Silver Mine Ski Center. ..check out Scott's "we have two days left so I hope you don't mind if I make an executive decision" message.

I don't remember replying yes to this but I definitely cannot go

    November 8, 2013

    • Scott

I think you were automatically marked as "yes" because you proposed the hike.

      November 8, 2013

  • Scott

We've got less than two days left and our plans are still hazy, so I hope nobody minds if I just take charge.

I wanted to do Doodletown, but the parking area is very small. I doubt 18 of us could fit no matter how well we carpool. So I propose this instead - it runs past an old mine, and that looks cool too.

4.7 miles, moderate difficulty. I found a map of the trails online, and I'll print out a copy before we go.

You can Google Maps your own directions here (I'm not sure what address to use for a GPS search, but if you need one, maybe you can find something nearby on Google Maps in advance):

I printed a couple copies, as well, in case people hike at different paces.

  • Julie

I'm having issues with this post, sorry for the multiple posts. Ok, so my question is what time should we officially be there? There are two times listed 9 and 10:30? Which trail will we hike? Where is the designated meeting point? Please advise. Thanks;-)

    November 8, 2013

    • Scott

Hi Julie - the final official meeting time is 10:30. 9:00 was the initial suggestion when the event was formed, but it won't be a strenuous all-day hike, so 10:30 should be good enough. For the trail route and parking, I made an executive decision on that a couple of posts ago - see the one that starts with "We've got less than two days left" for details. Hope to see you soon!

Carpooling: I'm not sure who even needs rides anymore. Geovanny, Stephen - you both mentioned carpooling, but I'm not sure if you needed rides or if you were offering rides to others. Everyone else, I assume, is handling their own transportation issues. Let's work this out soon so we don't scramble at the last minute.

Also, as the original plan states, bring water, lunch and snack, and dress comfortably. This will be a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. Saturday looks cold (high of 48°) so make sure to dress in the necessary layers. First one to reply "Okay MOM" to all of this gets sent to bed without supper.

    • Steve

Scott, I'm out for this one. Too many errands for Sat. Maybe try for a Sunday next time.

      November 8, 2013

  • Scott

The official carpool discussion: post here if you need or can offer a ride. If you are offering a ride, say how many you can take and the general area you will be able to pick people up. If you need a ride, can't get to a public location and don't want to post your address, private message someone who is offering. (I think you can do that on Meetup, right?)

I think I am rescinding my offer to drive in favor of a dog licking my face.

      November 7, 2013

    • Kym L.

I don't know Scott...think you may need to give a couple others a lift! Lol still bringing her though!

      November 7, 2013

  • Caroline

Sorry I won't be able to join everyone this time but I look forward to future meetups.

    November 7, 2013

    • Scott

Sorry you can't make it. We do all sorts of fun things, though, so I'm sure we'll meet you soon!

      November 7, 2013

  • Geovanny

I'm in the WP area, do we have a meeting point?

    November 7, 2013

  • Scott

Ok hiking fans - since this is the first time our group has really done anything like this in a while, I think it's probably best to start off with something not too strenuous. Poking around on the interwebs, I stumbled across this hike which is listed as 5 miles, easy-moderate:

    http://www.nynjtc.org/hike/doodletown-loop-bear-mountain

I'm not that familiar with hiking Bear Mountain, so I don't know how true that is, and also one guy who commented on the link said he saw a bear, so disclaimer: you are responsible for your own health and safety.

I'm honestly not a hiking pro and terrible at directions, so if any of you has a trail map or can find a better trail map than the horrid ones I found online, or if any of you is better at directions than I am, please chime in so I don't have to worry about us all dying in the woods.

    November 4, 2013

    • Kym L.

I see the same one: 1777E/doodletown bridle path loop from route 9w. 5 miles. 3 hrs. Easy to moderate.

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun! I would definitely go except that I have to be in at work in the morning.

Where do you guys want to meet up? Maybe in front of the Lodge?

    1 · November 6, 2013

I'd like to go. Was 10:30 the final decision as well as which trail?

    November 5, 2013

    • Scott

I think we're locked in on 10:30. Is that not good for you?

      November 5, 2013

    • Kym L.

It's perfect! Pick a trail yet/meeting point there?

There are is the path around the lake which is really easy. The other one is up the mountain. There is two paths to start and then only one path. I think the path has medium difficulty, just pace yourself.

    November 4, 2013

    • Kym L.

      I'd go for medium difficulty!

      November 5, 2013

    • Scott

The one that says "Brooks Lake Trail" is only a mile, it seems. I don't want to so that. We'd be done in less than an hour.

      November 5, 2013

  • Steve

Is anyone planning on carpooling? White Plains Metro north station seems like a good spot to meet, park and head out. Location is near Tappan Zee and Taconic, both will get you to Bear Mtn.

    November 4, 2013

  • Caroline

I would need a ride and quite happy to chip in for gas money

    November 4, 2013

Is this hike appropriate for all levels/how many miles is it? Thanks so much

    November 3, 2013

That... I should probably figure that out, huh?

Sorry in DC on this date. I'll be down if y'all go again

    November 2, 2013

Guys, I didn't think at all about Daylight Savings Time. It will be dark crazy early when we go. Any objections to pushing this up to 10:30 AM? Other than from my brain, which will be screaming "I could be SLEEPING right now, you monumental ASS" at me for most of the hike.

    October 30, 2013

  • Michal

OK, guys! The date and time are set! Feel free to discuss here to set up the details as far as where to meet and what to bring.

    October 28, 2013

Punch and pie. More people will come if you tell them there's punch and pie.

Really interested in doing it. Hiked Bear Mountain before but never went to the top because was with family. Want to go to the top next time I go. 9th is good for me.

    October 24, 2013

  • Michal

Hey guys, it looks like a lot of people are interested in this. I scheduled it because it seemed cool, but it's definitely not my thing. Can you guys discuss timing in the comments, so that I can update the date?

If you guys come to a consensus, I'll change the details, and you can all make plans in the comments on the specifics. :)

Saturday, November 9 at 12:30 PM - because I like the way it sounds when I say "Saturday, November 9 at 12:30 PM."

      October 24, 2013

  • Scott

I'd be down for this if I'm free on whatever date it happens to be.
