Winter Ride Series: First Timer Skeggs

WINTER RIDE SERIES

EL CORTE DE MADERA (aka SKEGGS)

Our last ride at Skeggs was a blast!  However it was definitely not what I would call beginner friendly.  This time around we'll stay away from the super steep climbs and really technical stuff.  I'll plan our route around hitting some of everything the place has to offer hoping for around 10-12 miles.  Now don't be fooled by what people may tell you, El Corte de Madera (aka Skeggs) is not a beginner ride location, but if you've been riding for a little while and are fairly comfortable on the bike you'll be fine with us.  I'm going to take it easy on our pace for this ride so don't worry if you think you're slow we'll all be riding slow on this one.  I really want to just have some fun and enjoy the fact that I'm riding again for the right reason, because it's what I love.

So come on out and join San Jose MTB for a great ride. Through the woods and down the trail to explore more of what our great geography has to offer for us knobby tired fools.

RIDE ROUTE:

http://connect.garmin.com/course/2780147

RIDE RATING:

EASY GOING C-PACE with plenty of breaks as needed.

TECH 5/10: Twisting single track with a few short drops and some rocks

PHYS 5/10: You start at the top and work your way down here so just remember you've got to pay back all that fun.  I'll try and keep the interest rate low

DIST 10 MILES

GAIN 2000FT

As always a helmet is required for all SJMTB rides and extra protective gear is recommended if you are tentative about riding down rocky trails.  If the ride is relatively short so you shouldn't need too much in the way of supplies.  Water, a small snack, and your basic trail side tools (multi-tool, tube, pump) should be sufficient for these rides. Longer rides will require a bit more in the way of water and supplies. If you've got questions please contact the ride organizer or refer to the links below.

Let's get out and ride,

David

What a great ride for a first timer at Skeggs. I haven't ridden much, but it was great to get back out there especially with a nice group. The legs are tired and my descending skills are not too rusty. David thanks for taken the great photos. This is not a tandem friendly trail to do with my son.

A smart phone with a GPS and google maps will get you there. There is enough signal on the road to get there.

My legs are shot, but it was a good ride. Climbs seemed longer than usual, but I was trying to keep up with the two racers.

Any chance of adding one more to the slower group? Love to come tomorrow. Never been the Skeggs & prefer to ride with people who know the place.

Hi Dave, do you have any idea how long will it take to complete the ride for the slightly faster group? I guess tires roll at 10.30, please let me know since I have time constrains and depending on that I might need to bail this time.
    Thanks

    February 22, 2013

    • David

Not really sure how long the ride will be Alex I'd bet somewhere in the three hour range but it all depends on how often we have to stop.

      February 22, 2013

    • Alex B.

Oops! I really wanted to do this ride with the group but I have time constrains. I will have to pass this time. Enjoy skeggs and will see u next time.

Even though I'm not going, I can't help pointing out; Slightly faster than slow is half fast :)

    February 21, 2013

    • Fredric

Krista, I think the FAST group should put down an A-pace. lol

      February 22, 2013

    • David

I think the faster group should just climb some more ;)

So as of right now I have 15 yes rsvps and 9 waiting. I'm going to open up the RSVP to 24 to allow for two groups of 12. Dean will lead one and I'll take out the other. If you could all be so kind as to reply to this comment with whether you'd like the slow or slightly faster group we'd appreciate it. I'll probably add some extra stuff to the slightly faster group to make our end time as close as I can.

Looking forward to this ride. It's going to be a nice easy going event with plenty of breaks so people can really enjoy Skeggs for what it has to offer.
