Winter Riding Series
Advanced Beginner Ride
Mellow paced climbing with a few regroups
I'm back! Well sort of. I'm not promising I'll be hosting my rides every weekend yet, but I will be getting out to lead when I can. Krista has been killing it down in the Santa Cruz area, but we have so much awesome stuff North of the summit to explore and ride as well.
Skeggs has long been a favorite spot of mine. It features some really amazing trails that do really well in the winter thanks to lots of cover. There are seasonal closures that may or may not affect our route (I haven't decided which one to do yet) but regardless it's going to be a great time out. The trails are a mix of tight and twisty single track, some with fun technical challenges like roots and rocks, and long fire roads. The good news is I pretty much always lead us down the single track. The bad news... that leaves the fire roads for the climb back out, and when I say climb I mean climb. The fun (or bad) thing about Skeggs is that you get to enjoy really fun descents pretty much right away. That leads of course to the bad part, and that is you have to end on a climb out. The climbs aren't totally demoralizing though for a relatively fit beginner and we'll take our time. Most of my favorite trails are wide open this time of year and there isn't any real rain in the immediate forecast so we should be golden. If you're new to riding in Northern Cali, or haven't had a chance to ride Skeggs with us yet, come on out for this one.
We'll begin our morning a bit later than usual (I'm not as early a riser as the past) at 10am in the Skeggs point parking lot, just up the ways a bit from Alice's restaurant at Hwy 84 and Skyline. Wheels will roll on time so be there a little early if you take a while to get setup. I like to do a bit of a warm up trail in the beginning so depending on which route I put together we'll either do Tafoni or Sierra Morena first. Both are great trails but totally different from one another. Which is why Skeggs is so awesome, VARIETY! Not to mention the absolute beauty of the coastal forest. I'm planning on this being a 3 hour adventure, so I'm not out too late. With that in mind my route will be custom tailored to those that RSVP.

San Jose Mountain Biking is a group riding community. We don't really encourage individuals to come out to our rides that want to do their own ride five minutes after starting with us. We start together and stick together. No one gets dropped period. Of course if you have to bail for any reason, that's fine just make sure either myself or who ever is sweeping the ride knows and makes sure you know your way back to the cars. SJMTB is okay with guests on our rides, even kids, just remember that they are your guests and as such they agree to the same terms of meetup that you did when you signed up http://www.meetup.com/terms/. We have a very casual and fun attitude about ourselves and try not to take ourselves too seriously, heck we're just mountain bikers. There are very few other rules we follow other than the stick together one...
• RIDERS MUST WEAR A HELMET ON ALL RIDES.
• THIS IS A MOUNTAIN BIKE GROUP... RIDE A MOUNTAIN BIKE (CX IS OKAY I SUPPOSE)
• RIDERS MUST OBEY THE RULES OF THE TRAILS. THIS INCLUDES THE COMMON ETIQUETTE RULES OF RIGHT OF WAY (HIKERS, HORSES, THEN BIKES)
• RESPECT THE TRAILS AND EACH OTHER
• LAST BUT NOT LEAST... HAVE FUN!
I am usually pretty easy to get a hold of if you have any questions, related to the group, or bikes in general (I'm a bit of a bike geek). Feel free to email me directly via the meetup link or @ [masked]
Thanks and happy trails,
San Jose Mountain Biking
