Calaveras Fault Trail: Vista Point - Intermediate

About 17 miles around 3500 ft of climbing.

Consists of 3 climbs:

Climb 1 = Bottom of Alum Rock to Top of Boccardo (1600 ft climb).  The trick is to pace yourself on this part.

Climb 2 = Calaveras Fault Trail to Vista Point - a steep 900 ft climb.  Due to the fatigue from the first climb and the steep sections of this second climb, I would say this actually feels 15-20% harder than the first climb up Boccardo.

Climb 3 = A moderate 850 ft climb back to the top of Boccardo.  This is the only way to get home!!  If you bonk in climb 2, you're pretty screwed.

We will set a bailout point after the Sierra Vista cliffside ride.  If you feel that you are pretty tapped out after Climb 1, we will have that group head on back so that they aren't stuck in the back country valley with no legs to get them back home.

**************************************************************

Heat Waves will cancel this ride since the park is closed down due to fire safety issues.

Here's a great training trail that's rarely explored for us in East Side San Jose. We'll start in Alum Rock Park, go all the way through Boccardo, Sierra Vista, up Calaveras Fault Trail to Vista Point.

I want to redeem myself since last time I hosted this all but one of us had to walk up the section that leads to Vista Point.  That being said, I would not attempt this if you're not used to doing these types of elevation gains.   Plus we're starting earlier so we don't have the sun making us fatigued.

The descent isn't crazy so XC bikes do very good here.

We'll meet at the Alum Rock Park main parking lot off of Penitencia Creek Road.

Helmet and properly functioning MOUNTAIN bike required. Lots of fuel and hydration recommended.

I've seen the hard work and the transformation from Neal and truly a missed opportunity for me. I am the new benchmark. Julie- that is an awesome picture and you all look great. When are you thinking of riding Boggs? been there once and loved it.

      September - stay tuned.

Im pretty pleased with how far I have come. Im sure we will see you next time Mark =)

Sounds like a whole lot of suffering went on yesterday!

    • Neal

Went really well! Wish you could of made it Mark

      August 25, 2014

    • Fredric

Mark, you missed your opportunity to be stronger than Neal. By next season he'll be way lighter and climbing on par with me.

      August 25, 2014

  • Julie

Fred - let's do boggs. Anyone know a good route please share. David says clockwise but need a directional map. Strava doesn't help. Lets go next month if I get a response.

    August 25, 2014

    • Fredric

Let's just do boggs blindly. I got plenty of leg endurance to not worry about getting lost.

Maybe when the weather gets cooler we can try the dreaded Washburn trail at Grant Ranch with this same group. If you didn't hate me after this ride, you'll definitely come at me with a knife on that one.

Just be thankful Fred didn't organize a Coe ride - yet ;)

      August 25, 2014

    • Julie

      I don't think he knows a good route...and let's not tell him....

      August 25, 2014

  • Julie

Thanks Fred for organizing this ride. It was everything as you described. The best part of the ride was coming around the the tower and seeing you at the picnic table....it meant no more climbing : )

    2 · August 24, 2014

    • Fredric

I should host a ride where I totally lie about the elevation gain. Everyone is thinking "wow, this is a tough ride for a 700ft gain"

    • Tosa

Julie: "The best part of the ride was coming around the the tower and seeing you at the picnic table....it meant no more climbing : )" looks like you had already planned to take the secret route out!

The climb to the vista point is a bit trying, but the only way to get in shape to ride trails like this, is to ride trails like this. Ultimately, it was a lot of fun.

Sorry I'm not into large group rides. I don't think it's good for relations with other trail users. This has gotten much larger than when I was originally put on the waiting list. Hope to see you another time!

    August 23, 2014

    • Tosa

There were plenty of large hiking groups and other cyclists. Regardless, everyone was courteous to one another, and it was a great ride.

Ended up giving my dog a bath and cleaning my house. Not as much fun as riding but hell my dog and house are clean.

It was awesome that nothing but endurance monsters came out for this one. Awesome pace. I was home, showered and relaxed well before 12.

What is the wait list for?

    August 23, 2014

    • Fredric

Check back tonight. I'm keeping a close eye on the RSVP #s since a large group with a ride this difficult will be too much on Julie and I.

      August 23, 2014

  • Neal

Put the 24 tooth granny on this morning. Ready to spin spin spin tomorrow!

    August 23, 2014

    • Fredric

don't you mean, spin spin spin, gasp for air, clutch your heart? That's what you'll see me doing.

For those that asked me in person about rest breaks, I would say it's very similar to the breaks we take on Julie and Winona's Intermediate rides -- not too much dilly dallying.

Hi, Will the parking lot we're meeting in, be obvious? On the park map, there are 3 parking lots across from the visitor center. Is it one of those? Thanks!

If I "ride in", do you mean ride to the meeting spot (park entrance)? Thanks!

      August 19, 2014

    • Julie

Yes. The front parking lot is small so we usually park in the residential blocks and then ride the paved road towards the park to the meeting spot. you will see the bathrooms on the right. We will be there.

      August 19, 2014

  • Mark

I've been out of shape lately and slow on climbs. Neal should have no problem with this one. Maybe with Bobs juice I can make it. I'll think about this one.

    August 18, 2014

    • Fredric

Neal told me that he's volunteering to be the "low" benchmark for this ride. Which means so long as you're stronger than Neal, than you're ok. I have every bit of confidence that Neal shouldn't have any problems on this one.

      1 · August 18, 2014

    • Mark

lol. Neal volunterring as the "low" benchmark. That's funny, but not the case anymore

      August 19, 2014

  • Fredric

After talking with Julie, I revised the ride so that no one gets in over their head. Please read the changes in ride description!! I'd hate for anyone to bonk in the valley and still have to climb out 850 ft.

Now I'm worried, maybe I will join Krista in Santa Cruz. ;-)

  • Lee C.

Hi, I was wondering... are we meeting at the parking lot just short of the toll booth?

    August 18, 2014

    • Fredric

Yes we're meeting in the parking lot. I changed the map coordinates to show exactly where on the map link.

      August 18, 2014

  • Julie

Hey Fred, have you noticed how the wait list grows the more we talk about how hard your ride is : ) I hope everyone who signed up read the ride description because this is not an easy ride.

    August 18, 2014

  • Mark

    oh hell no. sounds brutal.

    August 18, 2014

    • Fredric

I will say this though. Freddy T and I cooked it up too fast on Boccardo and left ourselves with very little on Calaveras. So when i saw that I couldn't out bike his walking speed, I ended up walking myself. Last time Gerry was the only one who didn't have to dismount.

      August 18, 2014

    • Julie

Mark , the way to successful make it to Vista point: 1) eat five chili D - dogs for breakfast; 2) gulp down Bob's mojo juice (I swear there is something in that gallon jug of his); and 3) keep telling yourself on that 3rd section "at least this isn't Grant Ranch. " you have to come out as it's been awhile since you had that heart - jumping-out-of your-chest-experience. Lol.

      1 · August 18, 2014

You guys keep talking like this and Im gonna switch to Krista's easy ride at De La

    August 18, 2014

    • Fredric

Just sing to yourself "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller....."

      1 · August 18, 2014

  • BEN O

So is this the typical AR ride "plus" more?

    August 18, 2014

    • Fredric

Yes, if you can climb Boccardo with plenty left in the tank, then the 2nd climb shouldn't be too bad. Just remember to leave just enough for the 3rd climb which is how we get back to start.

      August 18, 2014

    • BEN O

      Cool

      August 18, 2014

  • Julie

I will probably ride up to and around the Fault and then let you all continue to Vista. Time constraints...that's my excuse : )

    August 15, 2014

    • Julie

      It'll all be good....

      1 · August 18, 2014

    • Fredric

Don't worry Neal since you've climbed Kennedy before, this should only be a slight torture-fest instead of an all out one.

Hey, how come Vinh hasn't signed up yet : )

"WTF am I thinkin'...and how did Fredric con me into doin' it..." LOL
