Monthly Meeting: Nontheist Perspectives on Forgiveness/ Guilt

Without religious concepts like sin or a benevolent higher power, what criteria do non-theists use to decide if and when to forgive? To what extent can/ should we forgive others and ourselves? To what extent do we have free will; and does this affect how we view forgiveness?

We generally take a few minutes at the beginning of each monthly meeting to plan upcoming PVS community building efforts and events. The general discussions afterwards give members a chance to discuss relevant topics, current events, and explore new ideas.

Paid parking is available behind and across from the library. The meters accept quarters.

For the record I'd like to point out the obvious that: We have a book too! All of Western Civilization has been and is active in developing this book. Forgiveness and guilt are directly addressed in the book and we can even send people to Hell (prison) with the book. Do I even need to ask if Our Book is better than Their Book?

I'd also say that you are right. The Bible had not changed in terms of what it said historically about slavery. But I think that you would probably agree that people whose faith is based on Christ's teachings played a large role in eliminating slavery.

There are some things that are seemingly problematic to me in the Bible for sure. But there are also some things that far exceed the rules that Government has laid for us to follow, i.e, monitoring your thoughts as well as your actions, the idea of being long suffering and helping your neighbor even when they may not "deserve" it., staying humble, etc.... Things which the law does not address.

I liked the smaller group size which gave each person more opportunity to speak.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
