The Roof on Wilshire

Dining room at The Roof on Wilshire, Los Angeles, CAThe Roof on Wilshire is actually on the rooftop of The Hotel Wilshire, wrapped around the pool and with great views of the city. Most of the seating---tables and booths with heaters---is outdoors, making it a quintessential LA restaurant. Chef Eric Greenspan, who we are familiar with from The Foundry on Melrose, knows the city very well, and he has composed an inventive and tasty menu that embraces the diverse cultures of the city of the Angels. Crispy rice crackers made with nori for dipping into tuna tartare and spicy salmon roe are a perfect example, as are the barbecue pork rolls. Continue with the caramelized onion and frisée tart; and sticky, spicy chicken wings with peanuts, chili and tamarind sauce. We also recommend the grilled shrimp with parsley, lemon and drawn butter, the crab cake, and side dishes such as the fried Brussels sprouts with bacon and sweet-and-sour onions, or caramelized corn with chili watermelon glaze and queso fresco. All of these come as small plates to share. Bigger appetites might go for the crispy skin salmon, grilled chicken breast or New York strip. Creativity extends to the desserts. Try the orange cream panna cotta, topped with dark chocolate crumble, or the chocolate bread pudding served with coffee ice cream and peanut butter sauce. Some of the after-dinner drinks can almost be a dessert, like the “Tell Her You Saw Me,” composed with rum, coffee liqueur, fresh whipped cream and chocolate. The wine list is limited, so the cocktails are a good option.

The food is good and reasonably priced. There is a great view of the Hollywood Hills and the Sunset Strip area. The staff was friendly but a bit slow. The fried brussel sprouts with bacon were the highlight.
